guess which time and day of the week it was? :P
1. please tell us your name, date of birth and alien origins...
Hi, my real name is Jurjen Katsman, most sceners will probably know me
better as Nix from The Black Lotus. I was born 1st of June in 1978,
somewhere in a place called Utrecht, in that highly popular country called
Holland, famous for its wonderful substances : Currently Im living in
the United Kingdom, in the suburbs of London.
2. please state current scene ocupation!
I tend to think of myself as a coder, but most of my scene activities are
currently reduced to merely chatting around on irc, and providing TBL with
some well needed PR. Sometimes I however still do some coding, and Im
involved with a little library for easy Win32 demo programming, and still
intent to create one more demo.
3. wow! u started tbl or joined? tell us something about your old days! :
Nope, I didnt found TBL, far from, TBL was founded by Rubberduc ages ago,
also some of the more well known amiga members have been in the group
for a very long time, but TBL didnt really get started on PC until most of
the members of the PC demogroup Logic Design joined up during autumn 1996,
with that merge Jace, Balance, me, and several other people came to TBL,
and after a failed attempt at making a demo for TP6 the first TBL PC demo
was released at TG97.
Before I had joined up with Logic Design I was in the group Massive, which
was basically me with some guys from school. We made several demos,
including one with the infamous nix-shading, but the group fell apart end
of 1995, which is when I joined Logic Design, which in the end led me to
where I now am in TBL.
4. what was the first party u attended? u recall?
Yep, I do. The first party I went to was the Bizarre 94 in Holland,
probably one of the worst parties ever held, but it was the first decent
party ever in Holland, and what got me started in the scene.
5. what about that old disagreement with jace... u had enough about that
or care to go over it again?
Hmm, somehow some people seem to think me and Jace have this huge
disagreements, but in reality its not as bad as it might seem. We do have
a very different attitude towards demos and towards the scene as a whole,
but usually we can keep things quitte peacefull :
6. tell us about near future projects
Frankly, I dont know, we planned demos for TG98, planned a demo for ASM98,
and none of that ever happened. So yeah, probably not much of a surpise
that we are again planning one for TP8, but chances are probably slim that
it will ever be released. I personally dont think we should ever release
another intro, but several other members disagree with me, so you might
very well see another intro sometime as well.
Lots of people are trying to pressure us into releasing new things, but
I personally dont think we should release anything we are not reasonably
satisfied with, or atleast is truly better as anything we did before, or
preferably better as anyone ever did before.
Also we get critisised a lot for releasing things that are very similar to
our previous releases, which is another reason why I dont just want to
rebuild Stash into a new intro. Even if it might be able to win a party.
Atleast I want to make something that I personally think is reasonably new.
7. you heard about pulse.pl clean up? only scorpik+unreal+camel remain...
what do you think about that?
It quitte surprised me, but on the other hand, it doesnt really change
much, they where pretty much the only active members. What I heard is that
they will actually start a new group, together with some other people,
because they dont want to be associated with Pulse anymore, but I doubt
that would work for them, people will always look at them as Pulse, atleast
I will. They have been ruling the PC scene for the last year, and nobody
will just forget that.

Noone in particular : Just a big thanks to everyone who has some respect
for the people producing the demos, and a big fuck off to all the critics
who keep complaining about everything, and never actually do anything
themselves.

Second place at The Gathering 97. Love the introduction on this one.
The rest kind of just goes with flow...
As far as the code is concearned, just brilliant. Good 3D engine.
Great tunnels. Nice metaballs. Also remark to the win32 version arranged by
Balance and Nix. Very good!
Music is just very moody. Which is good! From first second to the
last it keeps the same flavour. Very nice syncing with the credits and
display of the awesome pictures.
WOW! 3 AWESOME pictures just in 1 demo! Hurray for Lowlife, Danny and
Louie. Angelic Particles by Danny and Louie won the picture compo and with
full merit indeed. The whole picture looks so real... The other pictures in
the demo are also awesome but not as awesome as that one!
Very nice design which tops it over and makes this one a demo for
posterity! The Black Lotus PC at its best!

Not much more needed to say... Sequel to Jizz. Which was also a 64k
intro with similar features released at The Party 97... Stash won Wired 97
intro compo. Check out the win32 version of both this wonders if you dont
own a GUS and want to hear the sound...

Lia by Muffler/Haujobb
When i saw the first haujobb stuff on pc, i felt some kind of happiness,
and i knew, that the musician was a genius. Well, in my opinion muffler is
the man who gives the style to the hjb stuff with his unique music.
Teo/Magnesium told me, that he is the brother of heatbeat, so i think the
talent is in the family : Well, lets speak about Lia, what he released at
Cache98. I think this is the first really good drum and bass track on pc.
I cant tell you any exact facts about it, as i am not a musician, so i
wont review the samples, etc...: its simply so cool, that i have to
listen to it in every single day.

About:
Coding
Objective:
To make a small executable file that does the following:
1. Loads a chosen demojournal text file number 7 or higher
2. Scans the file until it comes to the demosceners list
3. Counts number of sceners
4. Makes all statistical remarks anyone can imagine on that list.
5. Saves all statistics to a txt file 80*50 MAX
Limitations:
Final ascii file must be within 80*50 format!
Observations:
Source code not required. :
Size of the executable is not an issue. Size of output file is!
The bigger number of statistical remarks the better.
Dont forget to have a small remark on who coded it on the output file
Judging:
All entries will be tested and then the output file will be judged
based on the following:
-size/content
-statistical information
-Layout
Prize:

on future issues of demojournal with your name on it.

Pretty nifty idea... We get a list of sceners some guy might want to
check out for some information now and then. We have a small corner where
people can announce their sites and begginers can have an url to explore.
We have an interview. We have some productions reviewed. We also have some
charts for the more unaware people to check out who rules. We also have some
occasional news now and then. Even a party calendar...

Why the hell doenst anyone write FOR demojournal instead of AT
demojournal... You just dump some info on my mailbox and thats it! I didnt
mind in the beggining... Hei, cool. Someone cares on little demojournal...
Nowdays is starting to get a little frustating... Dont get me wrong, i like
knowing demojournal reached one scener further. Only i though i would get more
people caring on the making and not just on the output!
I guess i was expecting too much out of it...
Adok wrote that if a newsletter got past number 10. It was settled
on the scene. I am going to try to prove him wrong. As soon as i have more time
free, Im going to implement some changes in the structure just like in the
beggining when i was testing with stuff! For me settlement means lazyness.
The process of getting settled is far off better than the goal itself.

1. please tell us your name, date of birth and alien origins...
Hi, my real name is Jurjen Katsman, most sceners will probably know me
better as Nix from The Black Lotus. I was born 1st of June in 1978,
somewhere in a place called Utrecht, in that highly popular country called
Holland, famous for its wonderful substances : Currently Im living in
the United Kingdom, in the suburbs of London.
2. please state current scene ocupation!
I tend to think of myself as a coder, but most of my scene activities are
currently reduced to merely chatting around on irc, and providing TBL with
some well needed PR. Sometimes I however still do some coding, and Im
involved with a little library for easy Win32 demo programming, and still
intent to create one more demo.
3. wow! u started tbl or joined? tell us something about your old days! :
Nope, I didnt found TBL, far from, TBL was founded by Rubberduc ages ago,
also some of the more well known amiga members have been in the group
for a very long time, but TBL didnt really get started on PC until most of
the members of the PC demogroup Logic Design joined up during autumn 1996,
with that merge Jace, Balance, me, and several other people came to TBL,
and after a failed attempt at making a demo for TP6 the first TBL PC demo
was released at TG97.
Before I had joined up with Logic Design I was in the group Massive, which
was basically me with some guys from school. We made several demos,
including one with the infamous nix-shading, but the group fell apart end
of 1995, which is when I joined Logic Design, which in the end led me to
where I now am in TBL.
4. what was the first party u attended? u recall?
Yep, I do. The first party I went to was the Bizarre 94 in Holland,
probably one of the worst parties ever held, but it was the first decent
party ever in Holland, and what got me started in the scene.
5. what about that old disagreement with jace... u had enough about that
or care to go over it again?
Hmm, somehow some people seem to think me and Jace have this huge
disagreements, but in reality its not as bad as it might seem. We do have
a very different attitude towards demos and towards the scene as a whole,
but usually we can keep things quitte peacefull :
6. tell us about near future projects
Frankly, I dont know, we planned demos for TG98, planned a demo for ASM98,
and none of that ever happened. So yeah, probably not much of a surpise
that we are again planning one for TP8, but chances are probably slim that
it will ever be released. I personally dont think we should ever release
another intro, but several other members disagree with me, so you might
very well see another intro sometime as well.
Lots of people are trying to pressure us into releasing new things, but
I personally dont think we should release anything we are not reasonably
satisfied with, or atleast is truly better as anything we did before, or
preferably better as anyone ever did before.
Also we get critisised a lot for releasing things that are very similar to
our previous releases, which is another reason why I dont just want to
rebuild Stash into a new intro. Even if it might be able to win a party.
Atleast I want to make something that I personally think is reasonably new.
7. you heard about pulse.pl clean up? only scorpik+unreal+camel remain...
what do you think about that?
It quitte surprised me, but on the other hand, it doesnt really change
much, they where pretty much the only active members. What I heard is that
they will actually start a new group, together with some other people,
because they dont want to be associated with Pulse anymore, but I doubt
that would work for them, people will always look at them as Pulse, atleast
I will. They have been ruling the PC scene for the last year, and nobody
will just forget that.

for the people producing the demos, and a big fuck off to all the critics
who keep complaining about everything, and never actually do anything
themselves.

The rest kind of just goes with flow...
As far as the code is concearned, just brilliant. Good 3D engine.
Great tunnels. Nice metaballs. Also remark to the win32 version arranged by
Balance and Nix. Very good!
Music is just very moody. Which is good! From first second to the
last it keeps the same flavour. Very nice syncing with the credits and
display of the awesome pictures.
WOW! 3 AWESOME pictures just in 1 demo! Hurray for Lowlife, Danny and
Louie. Angelic Particles by Danny and Louie won the picture compo and with
full merit indeed. The whole picture looks so real... The other pictures in
the demo are also awesome but not as awesome as that one!
Very nice design which tops it over and makes this one a demo for
posterity! The Black Lotus PC at its best!

Lia by Muffler/Haujobb
When i saw the first haujobb stuff on pc, i felt some kind of happiness,
and i knew, that the musician was a genius. Well, in my opinion muffler is
the man who gives the style to the hjb stuff with his unique music.
Teo/Magnesium told me, that he is the brother of heatbeat, so i think the
talent is in the family : Well, lets speak about Lia, what he released at
Cache98. I think this is the first really good drum and bass track on pc.
I cant tell you any exact facts about it, as i am not a musician, so i
wont review the samples, etc...: its simply so cool, that i have to
listen to it in every single day.

Demojournal compo 1 information
About:
Coding
Objective:
To make a small executable file that does the following:
1. Loads a chosen demojournal text file number 7 or higher
2. Scans the file until it comes to the demosceners list
3. Counts number of sceners
4. Makes all statistical remarks anyone can imagine on that list.
5. Saves all statistics to a txt file 80*50 MAX
Limitations:
Final ascii file must be within 80*50 format!
Observations:
Source code not required. :
Size of the executable is not an issue. Size of output file is!
The bigger number of statistical remarks the better.
Dont forget to have a small remark on who coded it on the output file
Judging:
All entries will be tested and then the output file will be judged
based on the following:
-size/content
-statistical information
-Layout
Prize:

Nifty stuff
Pretty nifty idea... We get a list of sceners some guy might want to
check out for some information now and then. We have a small corner where
people can announce their sites and begginers can have an url to explore.
We have an interview. We have some productions reviewed. We also have some
charts for the more unaware people to check out who rules. We also have some
occasional news now and then. Even a party calendar...

Why the hell doenst anyone write FOR demojournal instead of AT
demojournal... You just dump some info on my mailbox and thats it! I didnt
mind in the beggining... Hei, cool. Someone cares on little demojournal...
Nowdays is starting to get a little frustating... Dont get me wrong, i like
knowing demojournal reached one scener further. Only i though i would get more
people caring on the making and not just on the output!
I guess i was expecting too much out of it...
Adok wrote that if a newsletter got past number 10. It was settled
on the scene. I am going to try to prove him wrong. As soon as i have more time
free, Im going to implement some changes in the structure just like in the
beggining when i was testing with stuff! For me settlement means lazyness.
The process of getting settled is far off better than the goal itself.
