issue. Yes. A lot of information about the scene - okay, skip the
next paragraph, there are enough demonews spread all over the mag.
And... well, is there anything to say? I wonder where ps will release
his next Demojournal issue! :
Ah, and dont forget to fill in the votesheet attached to this

! interview !
Session Start: Mon Aug 02 21:54:25 1999
*** inferno has joined demojournal
inferno hi there
ps hello! so who are you? :
inferno hahhh... a hard question that is.. what do u want to know
about me exactly? :
ps alien origins, name, age, shoe size..
favorite icecream flavour, number of brothers
social-political affiliations
and a pic of your girlfriend naked if you have one :D
inferno hmmm... my real name is szabolcs menyhei also known as
inferno, a member of haujobb and exceed... graphician or
what the hell... i was born 19 years ago in a town called
kecskemet in 1980.. 15th of november if you want to send
me card or something.. well really like chocolate ice
cream, and dont like my sister.. and im not interested in
any kind of political business.. ahhh and above all:
pic of my girlfriend at www.externet.hu/edo
ps uhuhuhuhuh 8 werent you on quad too? :
inferno yeah, i used to... but i joined haujobb with my best
friends from quad sagacity + sarix hii theyre
really cooool brothas ed: funk soul brotha
ps so, you are graphician, how did you started?
inferno hahhh my all life is about gfx!! no..no... well i was
really like to draw when i was a little child. and i could
and still i can draw on paper well.. and when ive got my
first pc after a few months i discovered some interesting
programs. and then ive started to play around with gfx..
thats it to tell the truth i had got a c64 before i had
got a pc but then i just used to playing with games :
ps and what are you doing nowdays on real life? :
inferno well im going to study at a university called gamf. gonna
learn computer science. but when ive got some freetime
like now in the summertime usually im starting to work
on some kind of comercial project homepage, stuff like
that actually i should have to put together a site with
some weird nude chicks :
ps wwwwwwaiiiiiiiiitttttt a second! where can we appreciate the
beta of that soon to be site? :D
inferno if you come to hungary maybe i can show you
ps :D ok by me! sorry for the readers though..
inferno next question pliiiz
ps anyways, what is so interesting about gfx and the demoscene?
inferno when i first heard about demoscene i thought that it is a
really good thing to put your creativity into different
kind of computer art... such as graphic, music or a more
complicated thing called demo... then i discovered the
feeling of the parties, the scene spirit etc.. thats why
ive fallen in love with scene years ago.
ps what do you think about people who say it is dying and that
kind of stuff?
inferno dunno exactly... i think scene is changing. like everything
in this hellish computer bussiness.. maybe the evolution of
the computers caused all this mess... but i still belive
that it is going to be better.
ps so what are your future plans right now on the scene?
inferno huhh trying to leave no. i think i became better
during the last year/months so im gonna release some
quality pictures in the future, and im gonna take part in
designing some demos watch out for the antiq releases
im gonna release an astdisk at the begining of the
twentyfirst century actually it is going to be the first
in the twentyfirst century: and then probably i will slow
down..... case i can never leave the scene!
ps what was your first demoparty?
inferno hehe... coool question.. as i said my first machine was a
c64.. i saw a lot of intros on that but nothing more. then
i sold that little evil c64 and i had forgot everything
about computers.. until 1996. then i bought my first pc..
my first party was cache96 autumn. actually the best party
ive ever attended!!! okay scenest-rage was cool too!
ps what are the best and worst memories of it?
inferno although i havent got any bad memories at all
ps so what are the good ones? :
inferno the only worst thing was that a guy listened to some kind
of weird heavy metal music next to us at maximum volume :
ps what about the good ones?
inferno well.. good ones? meeting with cool pals, drinking a lot,
enjoying the compos.. and laughing at a guy who was wanted
to fuck ritus actually that guy was drunk.. and
ritus is a girl who visits demoparties quite often :
ps bahahahah : why was cache96 the best one so far? :
inferno because of the coool feeling :
ps please use more then 5 words :D
inferno yeps yeps yeps yeps yeps yeps
ps cammon! : you can do better then that
inferno the reasons: -my first party, -cool people, -cool releases,
-held in the best time and at the best place
next question
ps are you ready for demojournals top quiz show contest?
inferno ahh yeah ofkoz! i was waiting for that!
ps 1. what is the capital of madagascar?
inferno hmmmmm.... dunno... Antananarivo maybe?
ps 2. whats your favorite color?
inferno mmmm..... green!
ps 3. how much wood would a wood chopper chop if a wood chopper
would chop wood?
inferno hmmm.. really dont know but i think ure a ripper cause i
saw this question in monkey island 2 !!!!!! :
ps :D just answer the question! :P
inferno i dont know really
ps 4. what do you call the sister of your brothers son?
inferno hey! she is my niece!
ps 5. what did you do on 15th january 1996?
inferno as i remember i was wodering how i hate silly questions
like that was
ps so what is your favorite demo and why?
inferno i really cant tell you.. there are a lot of demos what i
like. for example the good old second reality, stars by
nooon, angeldust1-2 shock+astroidea+chrome, robotnik by
rage, fulcrum by matrix and my new favourite: moral hard
candy by blasphemy.
ps uh, your one of the few ppl i met that mentions angeld as one
of his favorites! : finally someone undertsands me! :D
inferno angeldust is a hungarian demo.. one of the best.
unfortunately a lot of people havent seen it yet abroad...
ps who are your favorite coder/tracker/gfxian?
inferno statix/falcon/niko
ps why?
inferno statix for his cool demo called 303, falcon for his cool
music, and niko for his unbelievable logos!
yeah 303 is in my toplist too!
ps : you have any pets?
inferno yeah.. ive got a little black cat called cat! his rather
small so usually he comes home with a lot of wounds
ps original name
inferno yeahh.. unfortubately i hadnt got any idea.. :
ps does he sleep in your bed by your feet at night? :
inferno okay my mother calls him tomi
ps ah, little tomi :
inferno nooooo cause im allergic to cat hair
i would sneeze a lot you know
ps too bad.. :/ well.. anyways.. im running out of questions.. :
do you have an homepage and email?
inferno well.. my email is inferno@externet.hu, and my online
gallery is going to be at www.externet.hu/inferno
im going to open sometime around assembly
ps want to say hi to any friends? :
inferno yeah.. big HI to all of my friends world wide! and a big
HOLLA goes to spanish people cause i like them!
ps oh yeah, tell us about your little trip to spain this summer..
inferno ohhh unfortuntaly im to sleepy to tell everything about it
its 1:26am, but all i can say that spain is one of the
best places on earth! yeah and i like tha south part of
france too although paris is cool as well!
ps so which ones are better, the spanish or the french ones? :P
inferno heheh.. its difficult to decide. but there is something
about spanish people... i likeem :
ps im gonna tell your gf about this :P
inferno heheh spanish chicks are cute but not as cute as my gf
ps thats better! : ok, i think this is it! thx for your time :
inferno okay see ya

Overload by Procreation party-version
Found at www.scene.org
2nd place at Xenium99
System requirements:
c333 or AMD k6-2/300 I suppose c333 means celeron.
5.5 MB HD, 32 MB or 64 MB RAM Hey, its like that in the info-file.
Fast GFX card with vesa3.0 support Ive only 2.0 and it works fine.
Good monitor with fast mode switching.
GUS/SB/... Useless player used.
The demo:
This demo uses a mixture of low-res 320*200 and hi-res 640*480
parts. If you have a digital monitor with not-so-fast mode switching,
this will cause some frustration. But Procreation used the modes in a
logical way: the low-res parts are mostly complex 3D-scenes, blurred
and with lots of flares. The hi-res parts are used for pictures, or
for simple effects where the largest part of the background doesnt
change. Danish design is not included. Apart from the usual
color-depths 32/24/16/8, you can also select a 3dfx mode, so guess
what the 2D/3D balance does. The best parts IMHO are the worlds:
a man dancing in a disco, surrounded by an overload of lights, and
two spaceships chasing each other in underground tunnels and caves.
Those tunnels could use some mipmapping, as the textures are rather
small, and showing a lots of these at a large distance without
mipmapping is basically the same as showing random points of the
textures. Not nice to look at. A few stand-alone objects are in there
too, and of course, rotating torusses in different sizes and
combinations are an important part in todays demos :-/ Some
old-but-nice 2D-effects are used to prevent this from being a 3D-only
demo. A normal amount of pics are used, the best ones are the
hand-drawn cyborg-girl but the face may be photoshopped, Im not
sure and a rendered image of the typical green alien with big eyes
with 3D-objects reflecting in them, cool!. They are shown right
after each other, I think its better to spread the full-screen
pictures more, but that will require more mode-switches...
The music:
First we get a typical movie-intro, slow crescendo, but soon with
a few claps the typical demo-style takes over: mostly up-tempo synths
and drums, varying around a few melodic themes. There is much
repetition, but with the fast-changing effects on the screen, youve
no time to get bored. I like the style, but one slower part more
wouldnt hurt, especially in the end. Syncing is so-so: the different
parts start on new patterns, but the occasional white flashes are
always a bit too late. And the dancer would be far more impressive
if he moved to the beat with a bit less blur, so you can see it
clearer.
Worth the download?
Overload has its share of bad points, such as the mode-switching,
ugly tearing due to bad waitretrace syncing and several little
design-errors, but overall its well worth watching. Lets hope that
the final version is ready sooner than in a few years, as stated
in the info-file, and that it keeps the variation and the feeling.
Download it if you like 3D-demos.
Seven
editor: well, overload is a normal big demo but it somehow doesnt
make it that big, i believe the reason is because things
arent really connected, the 3d engine could use some work
but i think they are working on it. The music is normal demo
music so it is nothing awesome but ok. The design is a bit
er.. weird.. not connected things.. some scenes are ok but
they dont fit the rest of the mood.. the beggining was a
nice development though... well.. ill be waiting for the
next procreation demo. Im sure they will do alot better,
they have the means of putting together something really
great, this one was just an appetizer.
! intro !
Garbled by Dario Phong / PhyMosys
1st place at Euskal 99
http://www.euskalparty.org
Darios web-site is located at http://www.ross.net/dp/. You can get
the intro there if you have problems to access to the Euskal
web-site. Also, there are loads of coding tutorials.
This is Dario Phongs second 4k intro. While his first one wasnt
presented at any party, this one even won a party, to be precise
Euskal 99, this years Spanish scene event.
Originally Dario wanted to code a 64k intro. I saw early beta
versions of it and thought that with the effects that were then
making up the most part of this intro, he wouldnt even have a chance
to win at a small local party. I gave him advice what effects he
should cut out and shorten. In the end he decided to make the intro a
4k one, especially as he didnt have any music for it and a 64k intro
without music wouldnt be appreciated too much by the audience
anyway. He also followed some of my advice although not all - but who
cares, he won the party, so the people liked it, and he now has some
more Pesetas and a new graphics card.
The intro starts with a weird introductional screen. A blurred text
appears in the middle of the screen in vertical order. Its the usual
DOS font and moving in some strange ways which remind of sinus
scrollers, only that sinus scrollers are usually horizontal, that is,
go from the left to the right. In the background, some random ?
pixels are lighted from time to time. Probably this was made using
colorcycling, like many effects in that intro.
The next part is, as far as I know, a texture whose co-ordinates
were converted from rectangle to polar and which rotates similar to
the oldskool tunnel effect. With some colorcycling in the background,
this looks pretty nice. But soon the colours are cycled so much that
the whole screen gets filled by strange, undefinable shapes, which
Dario could have skipped in my opinion.
Other effects include stretchting, which is sometimes a bit
overdone, the ubiquitous fading, and bump-mapping. The last does not
look perfect either to my mind because there is some invisible field
in the middle from which the objects bumps, too, and it all moves
very slowly.
But there are also several parts which look quite fine, even though
they show undefinable shapes and use only colorcycling. I especially
like the final part: the greetings. The greetings text moves in a
circle, which looks good the only snag to it is that it moves
clockwise. If it were counter-clockwise, it would be easier to read,
as you read from left to right in our ABC. Well, a pity, but who
cares. In the end the circle gradually gets smaller until only one
letter is displayed: an N. Then comes a nice thing: Left and right of
the N, an E and a D are displayed. END. And the intro exits.
I think especially the last effect and the extraordinary number of
effects shown in this presentation have impressed the people at the
Euskal Party. Well done!
Dario is already working on his next 4k intro, for which he already
has some good ideas and some working code. Lets see what it will
look like in the end, and what place he will get at what party.

! music !
Inner Sanctum by Bam/Evolve
This one is a remix of the game tune from an old c64 game, im no
longer sure of the name.. i think First samurai :P well.. if its
not then sue me! : well.. i was at bams house yesterday and it was
nice to hear some remixes of the c64 while installing unreal to check
the capacities of 3d-acc 3d-engines.
Well.. The music starts with some ambient japanese sounds and goes
idling around the patterns on some relaxing sounds. Well.. i cant
do music reviews like we all know by now so ill just stop here :
ps
! quote !

Comments on Assembly 99
Well, I have not been able to download all entries from Assembly99
yet, but I have seen the results and most of the PC 4k intros.
Its really strange for this major party that almost no major
groups have participated in the competitions this time. Instead, it
is mainly local Finnish groups such as the joke-crew tAAt and p
formerly called pdg, which stands for paranormal demo group who
dominate the party results file.
Bomb, Nomad and other stars originally wanted to take part in Asm
99 with demos, too. But as you could learn in Hugi 16, they were
not sure whether they would manage to finish their productions in
time. And as you see, they didnt.
Other modern and popular groups like Purple did not intend to take
part in Assembly at all as Thorsten told me some weeks ago, their
only plan was to make a demo for Summer Encounter 99 in Denmark,
which they did within a week and with which they placed second. For
Assembly, nothing was planned by Purple at all.
The main compo at Assembly 99 was the PC 3d accelerated demo
competition. As you can see in the results, it was won by the
benchmark experts of Mature Furk Future Mark, the makers of 3D
Mark99, which is not much of a surprise. So again, the prize has
gone to the party organizers group, Future Crew according to
several people on IRC, Future Mark is a part of Remedy Entertainment,
which is after all a company owned by Gore/FC.
The second place went to Trauma. No surprise either, since this
group won the demo competition at Assembly 98 and can hence be
considered experts at triggering the emotions of the Assembly
audience. Third came Komplex. And that was all groups of an
international range.
The winner of the non-accelerated demo compo is Recreation,
followed by the Finnish Damones, which are known from the Boozembly
festivals that are held annually at the same time as Assembly. Also
the group Doomsday, or at least a part of it, has released another
demo in cooperation with kooma formerly COMA and pyy. Nice comeback
of a group that was declared dead by its organizers a year ago.
So what does the scene think of these productions? Not much. Most
people on various IRC channels such as coders, pixel and
coders.ger said that the demos were not of a very high quality this
time.
Same goes for the music entries. A member of the music jury at
Assembly 99 told me that 90 of the tunes were just unbearable and
commented it with the sentence: The Euro music scene is going down
the toilet. As you can see in the results, the music compo is also
the one with the highest number of disqualified entries that is
those who got 0 points.
But the worst compo was probably the PC 4k intro competition.
After the release of Picards revolutionary smash-hit Mesha at
Assembly 98, which according to Nix/TBL easily beat most of the 64k
intros presented at that party, the expectations were very high. And
all of us who expected another great achievement in the development
of the 4k intro art were disappointed just as badly.
I was first pleased to see that five people who had taken part in
some of the Hugi Size Coding Competitions had made entries for this
Assemblys 4k intro compo: Digimind, Juippi, hiteck, Itchi, and
Viznut. Juippi, who placed 4th, even greeted me because of there had
not been the Hugi Compos, he would not have bothered to learn coding
in Assembler.
Then I started the intros. Orinoco by Digimind and Pygo by Viznut,
placed second and eleventh respectively, did not work on my PC at the
first attempt. Well, okay, Ill try them again with another config
later, I thought. First I decided to watch hitecks The Answer 7th
place, which worked fine immediately. A story-based intro. A simple
fantasy story is displayed in 3d letters, and after each text-page
you can be a ball hopping around in a 3d world. Looked nice. Same
goes for Itchis Nature, which mainly showed water effects and
plasmas. Really good, however, I found Radiant by Juippi. It is the
only intro that played sound on my SB 16 PnP. Lots of 303-style sound
effects. And all in all nicely designed with colourful effects.
Now I was very excited to see the winner intro. If it was rated
better than Radiant, I thought, it had to be comparable with Mojo
2nd place at Asm 98 at least. Maybe it had even the quality of
Mesha, Void 3, Omniscent, the Little Big Demo saga or Outline. Or
perhaps it was better!
I had never heard of the author of the intro, mooze, before. In
addition, the size of the intro was less than 3 kbyte. Phew, what
cool effects were in that intro, I wondered in a 2567-byte .com file
that beat all the highly size-optimized 4096 bytros, whose authors
tried to pack as much as possible in this small limit?
So I was extremely excited when I slowly typed in the name of the
executable... paska.com. Enter.
I could not believe what I saw. A ugly picture of a Mokia handy
appeared on my screen, all in bright green on a black background like
in the times of XT computers. Then two ASCII faces appear, one of
them being Keanu Reeves, the star of the movie Matrix. On the top of
the screen, some short conversation is displayed. I dont understand
it, since only the first sentence is in English language - the rest
is all in Finnish. The conversation is interrupted by the effect of
the Matrix screensaver, some random zeroes and ones falling from the
top of the screen down to the bottom, and a rectangle saying LSD.
Finally the watcher gets to see a really lame tunnel effect it is
either not synchronised with the vertical retrace or uses a buggy
algorithm, as you can spot many pictures which do not belong to where
they are. Fortunately, the even lamer Matrix effect is displayed
again in the foreground, so at least you do not have to watch the
incorrectly set pixels all the time. Then a last picture of a Matrix
with zeroes and ones is displayed, with the text: Matrix has you!
The End.
I was surprised. How could this piece of crap win the 4k intro
competition? Besides, I was angry that as a result of this several
productions of a higher quality had not got what they deserved.
Immediately I logged onto IRC to express my rage something I, being
a calm person, rarely ever do, as anybody who knows me personally can
confirm.
The first person I met, Partikle, told me it was a very funny
intro, and that was why it got that many votes. I had also already
thought that there had to be something especially funny in that
intro, but as I dont understand Finnish it was not funny for me at
all.
In any case, I will try to get an English translation of the texts
in the intro as soon as possible and possibly publish it in
Demojournal or Hugi.
Still I think that a 4k intro competition is not a joke compo. On
the contrary, this is the very compo where coders have to show off
their technical and designing skills. A 4k intro is something every
demo coder can easily make alone. But creating a good 4k intro
requires a lot of knowledge and work. Not only do you have to know
how to code effects but you also have to optimize them in size.
Furthermore, you need a clear concept of your intro before you start
coding. Otherwise you cannot optimize straight from the beginning,
and you will have a lot of code between the individual routines to
set up registers that will blow up your .com files size.
That this intro, matriisi by mooze, won shows two things.
Firstly, it shows that Assembly is definitely Finnish dominated.
According to the organizers official statements, 80 of the visitors
last year were from Finland. For this years Assembly, no comparable
summary has been released yet. But party visitors I talked with on
IRC confirmed me that the majority was from the country or even
local, and that this year their share was perhaps not 80 but even
90.
The party results confirm this impression. At least in the major
compos demos and intros, there was hardly any group from outside
the country in which Assembly was held.
Conclusion: Assembly is not the big international scene event any
more it was in the past years, but rather a local or national one.
Secondly, it shows that there are a lot of people at Assembly who
do not care about the technical or the quality aspect of the
presented productions. In other words, the majority of the visitors
and, for that reason, also the voters is probably non-sceners.
That Assembly is not only focused on the scene but is rather a
general computer event for young kids and old people also becomes
obvious when you take a look at the Assembly 99 e-zine
http://www.assembly99.net. Non-sceners, scene newbies, and girls
form the editor staff. Thats nothing bad, as it allows a fresh view
on the happenings. But when you take a close look at the articles
posted in that electronic magazine, you will find out that most
either deal with the party action in general, which is fine, or
people that are obviously not related to the scene. There are
interviews with famous people - famous just because they are well
known on some IRC channels. And the party-related articles focus on
topics like a full WC hall, which, again, is okay to report about and
certainly also interesting to read but there is nothing about the
compos, for instance.
The fact that big scene parties are dominated by game-lamers and
the like is nothing new of course. Also it is completely
understandable that it is necessary to have many visitors in order to
pay the expenses for the party place, electricity and the compo
prizes the sponsors wont cover all, and after all, every party
organizer also wants to earn a bit money as a recompensation for his
efforts.
But it is no wonder why Assembly gets less and less attractive for
the demo scene. If you get beaten by a lame fake intro although you
invested a lot of time and work in creating a technically excellent
production, you will think twice before you will enter a production
at this party again.
In addition, for foreign sceners outside Scandinavia, travelling to
Finland is very expensive. Even thought you can earn quite a lot of
money if you win a compo, there is not much of an incentive to attend
the party with a compo entry that required a lot of sweat to create.
According to people on IRCNet coders, the prize for the winner of
the PC demo compo at Assembly 99 was 2730 the Amiga demo compo
winner got 1100. I was not able to verify this information because
at the time I was writing this text the Assembly web-site was down.
It should be clear by now who is the winner of the largest
international demo scene event battle fought between Assembly and
The Party.
But I think I should end this article with a positive statement.
For a change, a rather good aspect of Assembly 99 was the GFX compo.
Even though the subjects are not always my taste, the technique in
general looks fine to me in the best rated entries. And
interestingly, the top three entries were all made by people who are
active on IRCNet pixel.
adokhugi
distance did you know that members of komplex, tpolm,
koma and halcyon couldnt get IN to asm99 because they
sold all the tickets to quakeidiots!
editor: no, but we know now...
