Hair 1O1
by Logan
In ANSi, especially 25 line ANSimations all the people
look the
same. The area is just too small to come up with small deta
ils to make
people look different. Every now and then I may change the
sizes of noses,
eyes, ears, etc... but there
s really only feature that makes ANSi characters
like Tom, Logan, and Jose l
ook different: Hair.
Hair comes in all shapes, sizes, and co
lors. Brown, black, grey,
blonde, red...sometimes purple and blue
. Well concentrate on the more
popular colors.
First lets concentrate on colors, then we
ll go into styles.
Brown
Brown hair is hard to work with. Mainly because b
rown is a hard color
to shade. Brown is about the only color except dark grey th
at I will use the
backround color of 0 black with. Othe
rwise Ill use the foreground color
8 dark grey and use brown in the backround.
Following me?
or
Black
For Black hair I usually out line with dark grey and add in
highlights of seperate hairs. Thats because I hate shading
with dark grey.
Its just too hard for me to see to shade.
Grey/White
Grey and White hair is fairly simple. White as yo
ur foreground, grey
as your backround. Theres not much to it.
Blonde
Now, Blonde hair to start off, is yello
w. Shadings a problem though.
I use green to shade it. I also use green to draw gol
d. All my resources tell
me I should shade yellow with brown, but I think yellow on
brown looks too
ugly. I am colorblind, so Im not the a
uthority figure on this subject, but as
long as Ill do ANSi, Ill shade with green.
Red
For Red hair color you can either shade with black or dark
grey, or
you can highlight with pink. Or both. It
s a matter of personal opinion.
or or
Those are just some examples on how you may want to go
about shading
hair. Some people chose not to even shade hair. B
ut since hair is so
important to me, I usually do.
There are thousand of hair styles. The best thing
to do is just look
at whatever you plan on drawing, outline the hair,
and do your best to color
and shade. Ill show you how to do a couple on a smilely fa
ce.
Bald
Clean-cut simple Long blonde hair that would
Long hair
part to one side belong to a girl named Sally
covering an eye
Parted in the middle Over the eyes Mohawk
Butt-head style shaggy dog look
Anyway, as you can see, its
pretty easy to come up with your own.
Now for Different Hair Drawing Techniques
Drawing Indivisual Hairs
Most people who draw ANSi from comic books choose this metho
d.
Its basically just drawing the whole head of hair,
then adding black lines
all through it for indiviual hairs.
Ill use the simple parted in the middle style to sho
w you what Im
talking about.
I personally dont prefer this approach, a
nd seldom use it unless
Im drawing black hair with the dark grey.
Drawing One Amorphic Blob
The best example I could give of this is Jessica Rabbit
s hair in
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. Its just one shaded blob
. It sticks together so you
cant see indivisual hairs. I use this mainly when Im drawin
g in brown hair.
Drawing Streams of hair via darker colors
This is great for drawing Grey/White hair. I
ts basically choosing
a color that has a light and a dark color grey/white
,red/pink,green/yellow
and adding in lines of hair. This also works for Blonde h
air.
Just like everything else Ive taught you about ANSi
, drawing
Hair is a matter of personal prefrence. I tend to use all sty
les and
techniques.
That wraps up another session of ANSi 1O1. If you have any
