No memory req. mentioned, but I guess 32Mb should be enough. The demo: While the winter is nearing its end, the number of parties is increasing again. Too bad Yearning/Kooma (1st at Trax00) needs a 3D card, and Fate/7 gods (1st at Demobit) is not released (yet, I hope). So today we take a look at Different Engine/Satori. Let's warn you: this is HEAVY design stuff. Almost pure black & white, not the slightest 3D, no fancy stories, and it takes only one and a half minute. So what IS in there ? In fact, just one big effect: an overkill of windows, some rectangular, other formed with blobs. They scroll over each other, appearing and disappearing chaotically, and they all show grayscaled scrolling images: unreadable texts, a plasma-map, a movie of a face, strange objects or just random noise. First I thought it was in pure black and white, as most images are dithered, but closer inspection (2.5 cm) revealed some bits of gray. The whole thing is synced to the music via white flashes. The music is also very minimalistic: very atonal metallic percussion, with a very slow, vibrating lead. It's not my style, but it fits the demo. I was impressed by the size of the XM (Sorry Distance, I know that shouldn't be a criterion for music, but as a 4K-coder, I can't help but noticing it :)). It has only 6 samples, between 55 bytes and 4k, but it doesn't suffer from the cheezyness of a chiptune. Well done. Worth the download ? Note that the demo is only 1.4 MB zipped. The main data file (with the black & white movies etc) is extremely compressible, it's a pity the demo doesn't cater for that. The rest is a matter of personal taste: some will love this extreme stuff, others better stay away from it. Judge for yourself. Seven =====! intro !================================================================= Public Broadcast 2 (PBPT) 64k intro 2nd place at Demobit 2000 (Slovakia) Shakul - programming Laser Harp - music The previous work of this duo was Quickly Distorted Public Broadcast (QDPB). It won the intro competition of the Fiasko 1999 party. It is grayscale, has a flatshaded 3d engine and a constant white noise effect. It is very similar in outlook, music and overall feeling to the demo TB-2RX by TPOLM (Gathering 1998), but in 64k. Public Broadcast part Two is the sequel to that intro. Now I think that the authors found their own voice: the intro more original, it is well-designed and has many fine effects. There are 3d scenes, drawn with flatshading and wireframes; some 3d morph effects; a very good 3d starfield with transparent spots (although it reminds me a bit to Bakkslide 7); some quite fine keyframer-effects with cubes. Additionally, there are many smaller effects shown here-and-there. For example, a row of little circles waving through the screen, a small voxel terrain in a small circle-shaped screen, and many other ones. Some technical details before you start downloading: the intro runs in a high resolution, it supports both GUS and SB, and runs both under DOS and Windows. I think that there will be no trouble with running it anywhere. (This does not apply to QDPB which I can't execute on my P2 :( Now its time to download it, the intro's homepage: http://www.scene.cz/pb/ Gekko / gk@scene.hu =====! music !================================================================= Last train smash www.tdr.scene.org -> #151 Ah, another release by our favourite smash, who made me so good with his musicdisk "there goes the neighbourhood". His new release introduces two songs - "Last train" and "tune for hugi". We'll take a deeper look at the first one. Only one notice before I start. If you're sure that you'll get this song, do it and read the review after listening, because you would not enjoy it fully. It opens almost like a normal jazz track with piano and a low string, played with 4/2 tempo changes. Then piano mutes and a strings with rapidly decreasing volume envelope come in, demonstrating breath of loco which is slowly heating up. Again comes a piano and everything is repeated while more and more percussion joins it. Then comes a break and strings have volume envelope turned off, so their whole melody comes out. In this part is track in standby, it just goes and keeps the tempo which forces you to await the return of percussion. Track continues with the percs till the short break, where comes up a sample of train. After it last instrument comes in and plays a melody while another weird sound slowly fades in, giving the track experimental sound and expectation of something more. But it won't get fulfiled, because the track ends - we have to wait for another release. Fortunatelly smash packed to it a "tune for hugi", also a very good song with a melody which reminds me on "stargirl" and other tracks from the mentioned musicdisk. I think, I should also mention that the melody played by the piano is interesting and just lovely and helps to fulfil the atmosphere of this nice jazzy triphop track. This track perfectly presents use of the tempo changes and good use of breaks, which actually don't break it and help to keep up the track interesting. Of course is here also good work with the sample changes. A track which isn't interesting for the passive listeners only. Also check out tdr#150 which re-releases "lebe mein welt" by kritix (reviewed in demojrnl#58) and features also twister with "killer of the zodiac" (experimental dnb) and looza with great hiphop called "noddin'". Looks like new members of tdr will have something to offer. Oh, I hope you've visited mp3.com/tokyodawn. - Retro - Here I am with the retro for the third time. Today I'll write about past musicdisks of stereoman (from now sm only), member of progresive musicgroup called NOISE. If you browse deeper in the past of Noise, you'll find lots of great releases by sm with really good samples (I'm saying it just because he is releasing in mp3 to "protect" his samples). His older releases are a lot influenced by Orbital, Underworld and by Dune, who gave to his music really lot and actually sm dedicated one musicdisk to him - "Duneicated" - and that is today's first point. It contains 6 songs which are specific by their combination of electronic and classical sound (for example "lands of unreal"), high stereo separation not only for percussion, but for all sounds, lots of echoes and reverbs, and by very own ambient samples which became rightfully a library for many people. Very interesting is also the possibility to see how can one tune evolve in two ways - sm included "h" and "h"2, both based on the same song. And again one amazing thing is "Samo edin", a 17k chip tune which will show you excellent work with IT instruments. I'm listening to the mdisk right now and I still think that it's great thing, really worth downloading. Another musicdisk which came out in 1997 is "modes", this time it contains 5 tunes only, but they're anyway great and what is important, they're again very original and different, now with more influnce by his friends from NOISE. Last musicdisk is -e-4-, which clones ambient techno of sm and md's steeldrums (at least in the style). I don't like this one that much, but I guess that big fans of md will like it. I like "duneicated" best, but this feeling can be a lot affected by the past, so I'll leave the choice on you. You'll find out that you don't know how could you live without it after listening to it. And here's only one way out - get more music by him, I've heard most of the songs which came out separately and I can't remind on one that I wouldn't like (ok, maybe one, but that's really all). tryhuk ?------------------------------------------------------------------- -- - - !====:] commercial break!
