!: weekly :
This week! Ive been mostly eating... chicane
! interview !
Session Start: Fri Feb 11 07:21:16 2000
*** rzb has joined demoj
ps hello there
rzb hello
ps so who is rzb?
rzb rzb is a lazy person who should be doing c-class right now :
ps stop complaining and talk about yourself :
rzb ah well, my real name is Antti Pllnen..
Im 22-and-almost-a-half years old
i think ive been doing this scene-thing for about
seven years now, graphics mainly and also some mailswap some
several years ago
ps how did you got started into computers?
rzb my parents bought me a c-64 christmas 82 or 83
i dont remember so i was permanently hooked then
before that id only seen some BIG mainframes and old pcs.
played decathlon on a keyboard
ps you started pixelling on c64 then?
rzb no not really
ps then when were your first computer gfx experiments?
rzb i only got into the scene some years later when i got a pc,
my friend showed me a few demos by future crew and skull etc.
before that, the scene i knew was just some pretty crackintros
probably the first things i did were bbs-ads with
deluxe paint 2 and some silly pictures.
i still have them somewhere and they are truly horrible
ps how did you evolve on the software you use?
rzb evolve? what do you mean? i still use deluxe paint and gfx2 :
ps no photoshop for you?
rzb mm nope
ive tried it many times but i usually just end up playing
around with filters and colors
ps so you are one of the few real pixelers around?
rzb well you could probably say that. it might be because im too
lazy to learn to use photoshop, but i still like pixeling a
lot.. its pretty sad that most gfx nowadays is just
retouched scans. of course there are real graphicians,
and i respect that. there are several great graphicians who
can do wonders with photoshop
ps do you still follow the demoscene and the graphics side of
it in particular?
rzb well not as much as i did a few years ago..
i still browse gfxzone now and then
ps who are the names that still impress you with new pics?
rzb uhh hard one : facet did a pretty picture recently i think,
visualize is one of the best also
i really cant recall many names
ps what do you think about the typical originality vs
redrawing technique debate.. is it better to do an original
with bad technique or a good drawn redraw?
rzb actually it depends on how its made.
if repaints are done well, with changes to the original
like new colors etc, it might be very nice
i like a good technique. originals are harder to make ofcourse
but whos to say a picture is totally original?
I think every artist copies something or other even if they
might not know it
ps but should an original be more valorized then a redraw?
rzb yes of course if i guess right what you mean
ps oki, lets move to other topics.. how was your scene carrer..
what groups were you at and are?
rzb the first group i joined i still am in, Topaz Beerline,
but were pretty much inactive. We did the Yahoo diskmag in
94-95 but then we just got lazy.
there are several demos on c-64 though.
also ive been in @ and doomsday which is still sort-of alive
with damaq doing his silly demos hi
but now im mainly focusing on damage
ps so what are damages plans for the near future?
rzb i should be doing gfx but i need a new monitor for me amiga
some amiga-stuff, for A500 i think.. maybe another pc-demo
sometime in the future its pretty quiet
oh! and stickers
ps how is the finn scene going nowdays?
rzb it seems to be somewhat active, as i saw at elevator 2000
a few weeks ago. several nice demos including ours at the
compo. at least a lot more than i expected. it seems a bit
sad tho that the young scenekids arent as active as some
older sceners used to be
ps what was your first demoparty?
rzb assembly 93
ps what are your best and worst memories of it?
rzb i liked the party atmosphere instantly, people drinking and
going nuts, lots of banners and group spirit also the demos
were damn cool shown on a big screen which id never seen
before
worst? hmm
probably being a bit out of it all, not understanding THAT
much about things going on also i wasnt that used to sleeping
on a cold, hard floor back then so i didnt get much sleep
ps oki so you ready for demojournal top quiz show contest?
rzb sure. shoot.
ps 1. what was the most interesting book/movie you ever read/seen?
rzb ever.. hmm. ive seen so many. Withnail I is my current
fave movie
ps and book?
rzb filth by irvine welsh
ps 2. what is the meaning of life?
rzb 42
ps cliche answer.. cant you be more original?
rzb uhh no ive got a headache, im not in a state to think
such huge matters
ps 3. whats your favorite color?
rzb purple
ps 4. what do you think about your parents?
rzb my mum is very nice to me. feeds me when i ask and all that.
i dont live at my home anymore ive got my own crappy little
box in the town i study in.
ps 5. what is the capital of antananarivo?
rzb madagascar :
ps uh.. i screwd up there :PPPP hehehe
anyways... do you have a pet?
rzb yeah my mums got an american cockerspaniel. very cute..
starting to get old now tho..
ps whats its name?
rzb waldemar
ps weird name..
so where do you get the inspiration for your pics?
rzb mostly form just doodling around, maybe some photographs.
i try to remember little bits of pictures and make some new
from it unfortunately i cant draw that well so i make logos :
ps your work is mainly very dark.. where did you get that side
from?
rzb dark? have you seen any of my work?:
i havent released much since 1995 :
ps erm.. you are confusing me now..
rzb confusion goes both ways, dear
ehh thats from razorback probably, not me :
dont worry, i would be a bit confused too.
thats some swedish gfxian in tulu or tolou or whatever crap
group hes in and not me
ps why is life so confusing?
rzb it seems to be why should anything be too easy?:
ps well.. now where do you have your work online?
now i need to redo my whole interview research
rzb actually, its nowhere really
i have some logos i could send you but its mostly unreleased
ps so, here you have it folks... how demoscene can be
missleading hehe
well.. on with the interview.. what do you do on
real life nowdays?
rzb i study programming not much else nowadays, just study and
work/work and study and go to parties and raves
that sort of thing
ps much raves happening in finland? big clubbing scene?
rzb yeah there usually are several clubs during the weekend
even in tampere which is a lot smaller than helsinki
ps so what are your favorite demos/intros of all times?
rzb oh man let me think
there are too many: but i like stuff with a sense of humor,
like melonstrations, cncd-stuff and orange etc.
one demo i like very much is red storm by triad
ps red strom / triad thats amiga right?
rzb nope. c64
ps these new 3d acc demos dont appeal much?
rzb 3d-acc demos are cool yes, as long as they are not JUST
3d-demos thats a crap trend i hope to see dead.
like kasparov or whatever
ps you ever tried 3d modelling?
whats wrong with kasparov? WE ARE VERY GOOD!
rzb not further from making spheres and cubes with pov some ages
ago. is zooming 3d a demo? i dont think so
ps wanna say hi to some friends and that stuff?
rzb ok well hi to everyone i see on irc every damn day :
and also to wojtek who seems to have disappeared,
thor of tplom, all zymosis folks and..
everyone who thinks they know me :
ps and dont forget about homepages and email..
rzb http://batman.jytol.fi/antpol is my homepage
and my email is there
ps okidokie.. thank you for your time
rzb ok youre very welcome
ps i hereby shut down this interview

! demo !
Dreamless by Woorlic party-version
Found at http://woorlic.hostname.nu
there are no Midwinter releases on scene.org,
nor did I found a Midwinter URL, strange
1st place at Midwinter00
System requirements:
From the website: Win32, directsound, ddraw full-screen or gdi window
P133+?, no mmx required, 32 MB min but 48 recommended, 4.6 MB HD
The demo:
Weird, weird, weird. This is a really strange production,
with a mixture of different styles. At the start we see about
hundred rotating transparent cubes, with the credits on top.
It looks good, but the cubes are low-res, while the font
as the rest of the demo is high-res. Scrolling rows of circles
appear, adding to the Danish design-feel. Now a few texts
introduce a theme/story: the narrator is haunted in his dreams by
a man with an ugly face. We see that face Hercule Poirot meets a
stone-age troll zooming out, and that effect becomes a kind of
Leitmotif for the demo, together with the transparent cubes.
Meanwhile, normal effects are shown like transparent
phong-shaded 3D-objects, a sinus-waving background, and the title
with rays of light shining from behind it. Now the messages are
abandoned till the end of the demo, and Danish design comes back
with rotating segments of circles remember Kkowboy, black flares,
and lots of random AA-lines. But the partly sharp, partly blurred
background and the kanji-chars break with this style. A very good
and long picture is shown next, scrolling to the left and featuring
a mixture of faces, a graveyard-cross, bodies, a wall... It reminds
me a lot of the Fulcrum credits-picture, but the feeling is much
darker. In the last parts theres nothing new, except a morphing
2D sinus/flower form, and then the text says Im awaking now!...
The music is more coherent then the demo, although the start got on
my nerves very quickly: pure boink-boink-boink. It improves when
the drumline becomes more complex and a very soft melodic comes in.
At the part with the Chinese chars some voice-samples are used
talking girl, and after that it continues as a normal hi-res
demo-soundtrack.
Worth the download ?
Dreamless is way better then Woorlics previous demo, Homeless.
Its hard to judge the mixture of styles: there are some nice parts
in each style, but the combination feels strange. The large picture,
the transparent cubes and the overall design are the good points,
while the story does not really add much to the demo IMHO.
The messages are too simple, in an ugly big font and sometimes in
bad English maybe I shouldnt speak too loud about that myself :
Also the background with black horizontal stripes is a misfit:
it makes the wobbling part look ugly, and it interferes with the
light-rays from the title. But with a 5-days production, you can
expect a few glitches. I hope Woorlic works a bit longer on their
next production, cause its a pity when the quality of a demo
suffers due to lack of time... If they keep improving, the next
....less will be a really nice demo :

Many sceners consider Void 3 the best 4k intro of 1999,
still I found that it is not so widely known, so it deserves
a review, I think.
As it is a 4k intro, you will probably forgive me for mentioning
some technical details. This intro was made for DPMI. It plays music
through a Sound Blaster and it runs in a low resolution - true color
videomode.
There is some music - drums and some synthetised reso-effects -
and speech ! synthesis. The speech synthetiser reads up the words
the future is now - well, in a strong computer voice accent, of
course. The music is more like a bunch of background noises, not a
complete tune, like for example Shapeshifters.
The intro is based on bitmap effects, such as tunnels, planes,
and plasmas. Generated true color textures are used, they look fine.
The plane effect would need some antialiasing, though. There are some
sprites, too. They usually form some 3d object. Too bad that these
objects are rotated about the centre of the screen, not together
with the background.
This intro is quite well done technically, all these details
together are amazing for a 4k intro. Unfortunately it is not really
enjoyable - at least as for me.

! music !
- Retro -
Because any of the songs Ive downloaded wasnt good enough to be
reviewed, Ive decided to start a new column called Retro. I would
like to look back and review songs that belong to the best and they
have been forgotten or the younger of you havent heard them at all.
I hope I will be able to keep it longer than one issue.
Today I would like to write about small musicdisk called But shes
the one by Mick Rippon. It came out under label Analogue Music in
1998 and it contains 3 songs - pleading, but she loves me and
every hour.
You may already know his songs Existing, Working in progress
which was released through Stage 9 musicdisk or his MC5 entry
Alone. Mickrip writes guitar tunes which are often ballads, but
they are chiefly typical by their very specific groovy feeling and
strong melodies supported by very good instrumentation. Play them
and youll hear that every instrument can be heard very clearly and
it has its own melody which is very well worked out. Instruments
like strings are played with low volume, so they dont take over the
song and they help to fulfil its atmosphere. From the tracking side
of view they are also very good, sampled sequences are used only
occasionally, most of the song is tracked with simple guitar samples
with necessary effects only. Only the samples are a bit worse,
but thats because he cared about the size.
Songs on this musicdisk belong among his best and if you havent
heard it yet, get it. It can be found here:
ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/music/groups/analogue/disks/butshe.zip ?

! question !
what do you think about the idea of making an archive of vhsed
demos high quality tapped
who would buy it?
-whisker
good thing to keep old demos that dont run on current systems
anymore and under OS that are not dos related in mind..
-unlock
vhs sucks. Id much rather have vcd or preferably dvd, especially
since the replication costs arent that high anymore.
-saffron
dont tape em, make avis or mpegs of them, that would be
ingenious, having all the old demos recorded on such digital formats.
-kombat
Very good idea. The idea of watching the coolest demos while
relaxing in a sofa in front of your tv whithout having to run the
production/configurate your computer every time can sounds nice.
But this kind of media vhs would of course suit Wild demo even
better. I had a project of making video containing a compilation of
the best ever wild compos presented at parties im not talking
about those see guys were destroying a computer wild, but real
wild demos/animations such as KydBalle TP92 wild, or Scorpiks
Wired98 Wild demo. But the thing is that i will probably never
have the time to work on that project. The basis work is contacting
every single demoparty organiser since 92 and try to collect all
demos and vhs or avi and then to compile the very best one on VHS..
or better: on dvd. You will need special hardware for that..
but i can assure you that it might be a pain in the ass getting all
the needed material as im quite sure some wild demo would be hard
to find. Would there be anyone willing to do that? PS?
-darkness
dvd.
-distance
a vcd would be better so someone else could watch it, too...
anyways, ive been thinking of putting goodnold golden amiga
demos and pc ones, too to video, and hopefullt i will eventually
do it - in just five years it can be almost impossible to find
computers to watch early 90s demos so a vhs or vcd would be more
than neat.
-melwyn
Archive with demos vhsed, or old VHS demos archived to mpeg or
something? Btw. Ive seen an old VHS demo Global Trash 2. recently
which was very cool. The first wild demo or something. But VHSing
PC demos seems to be a good idea maybe coz of lame hardware. :
-teo
Yes, yes and yes... I already have an archive of C64 demos made
this way perhaps not the highest quality and was thinking of
recording some ZX demos to tape as well. The only problem of PC
is that it is not easily connectable to VCR and demos I would most
like to see are old classics like 2nd Reality, Cardiac or
Vivid Experiment.
-RadXcell
i think its a great idea, every party should have a tape of
their releases if only for posterity : i made a few tapes er,3
with demos for a rave here in toronto, people loved them even though
they had no clue what they were watching. sadly, i also made one tape
with geiss for winamp, and that was even more popular even though it
was boring and repetitive cant complain though, 1/2 the crowd was
dosed and geiss *does* look better in that case - all those
saturated colors.
/me thinks a lot of old excellent demos dont get watched simply
because people dont know about them and hence they re not gonna
download them. tapes would be awesome, only youd need a lot you
can put maybe 30 demos on one, sorry for stating the obvious
-florin
VHS:ed demos? Interesting idea, with the obvious pros being that
people who dont know much about computers could learn of this art
form, and maybe if all these new demos were VHS:ed maybe even I could
see them - owning a P166 is a bitch The only con I can think of is
the risk of VHS becoming a standard format for demos, but, as the
scene still is as it is, I cant see that happening.
Is this just a hypothetical idea, or has someone really planned this?
-jobe
State of the art is mpeg-2. How would you spread hq copies of
vhs tapes? Mpeg-2-demos should fit on a cd...
-Malte
Makes me sort of think of DVDs and some mUlTiMeDiA-iNtErFaCe -
thingies. And about someone holding a gathering in a small
cinemastudio viewing demos of course..
-Eino Keskitalo
Shortly: I WOULD GIVE A LOT OF: WHATERVERYOUWANT,
if i could get a quality collection of scene releases.
Esp. oldskool PC and ALL AMIGA productions!
Ps.: Yes, dude. Do it. We need that collection.
-waprich warpig/exceed
i buy that! :
-gardner
editor: humm.. so many answers this week i feel i need to say
something. First this wasnt my idea.. I had read about it
on csipd a couple of times loooonnggg ago. Then i had a
talk about it with a scene friend of mine from portugal and
then about 1 week later i was ASKED to put this question
to see what people were thinking about this. So due to the
enourmous positive support i think i can say a similar
project will be started soon
as for me.. I think someone should get all prods from all
compos since the very first demoparty and have everything
tapped. like 1 tape for each party or something like that..
including gfx and maybe the top5 music too. But this would
be more like a big ftp archive so maybe just demos and
wilddemos for now
