! demo !
Myth of Orion by Anaconda Party-version
Found at www.scene.org
1st place at the Euskal 7 party
System requirements:
Aha: some info in the fileid.diz:
MMX, DOS, no emm386 XMS is OK, SMARTDRV did crash without,
vesa2.0, SoundBlaster. When you quit with ESC, the player goes crazy
sometimes. Further 5.7 MB HD, and wild guess a PII with 32 or maybe
64 MB RAM. Yes, heavy, but worth it.
The demo:
Actually ps has already a review at the moment for the next DJ,
but after seeing Myth of Orion, I started reviewing right away.
One word:
WOW!
This, ladies and gentlemen, is a Good Demo. We can even say a Very
Good Demo. To start with, my coder-heart rejoices heavily at the
sight of the raytracing. No! Not simple spheres and pillars and
planes! There are actually Scenes With A Meaning: an oasis in the
desert, with trees reflecting in the water, 3 rooms with strange
alien machines, ... There are even parts with a clever combination
of normal, sharp 3D and shadows calculated with raytracing! Trying
to be objective, I must say it is very unsharp raytracing 1 ray for
4*4 pixels with blur. Still, its damn impressive.
Normal 3D worlds are plenty, with spaceships, spider-like robots,
pyramids, the good old face emerging from a wall, and of course those
fabulous birds... Not everything is normal though, take a look at
the flames from the spaceship and the pyramids, or wonder how they
made the alien humanoid so smooth I bet its some kind of metaball.
And yes, as you might have guessed, there IS a theme, that is
followed for most of the 8 yes, eight minutes the demo takes.
I like long demos :
Its not a 3D-only demo, though: some very cool 2D-transitions link
the 3D-parts together. Between the space-portal and the destination
f.e., there are some WinAmp-like effects, further there is TV-snow,
water, interlaced video, little squares eating away one effect and
showing another, and an original sand being blown away-effect,
slowly revealing a picture. Beside the countless textures, there are
5 pictures, most of them hand-drawn. They are fairly good, and
hand-drawn pictures are a rarity nowadays, but I think the skulls
and the woman-picture doesnt really fit with the theme. At the end,
a short video of Anaconda at the party-place is show. Low-quality,
but what do you expect of clips in demos ? :
The music:
Eight minutes of music, that means either several styles, or a
serious boredom-risk. Luckily, its the first thing here. There is a
sample with the name vangelis.xi, and indeed, in the intro and
several slower parts, the music has something vangelis-like: epic,
slow melody, impressive percussion going crescendo. At other parts,
f.e. in the space-portal, more techno- and rock-samples are used,
faster beats and more synthesized leads. But through the variation
and different styles, there are two constants: the powerful beats,
and a vivid, happy melody Im not very happy with the word happy,
but I dont know a better word. I like this a lot. Syncing is at the
demo-part level, as usual. There is one thing Id like to see more
in both this and other demos: sound-effects that follow the visuals.
It happens only once here: static noise at a TV-snow effect. Imagine
a demo with a splash sound at water-effects, roaring engines when a
spaceship takes off, the sound of opening and closing doors, etc,
just like games have music and sound-effects. But this would probably
double the size of the module... Hmm, this is getting off topic.
Back to the demo!
Worth the download ?
Do you dare to ask ? Ok, Ill try to summarize: Myth of Orion is a
Very Good classic demo: low-res, high-color, much 3D, some 2D, cool
transitions, a theme, good code, great music, and enough fresh ideas
to make every second of the 8 minutes worthwhile. Its not perfect,
it does have some design-errors like unreadable credits or effects
that are below par like a tunnel without mipmapping, but everyone
who has the hardware should see it at least once. Too bad I have
already sent in my votesheet for Hugi 17, or I would radically
change a thing or two :

Looza
www.trd.scene.org 120
This release is really large - 8:20 in 10MB file. Looza introduces
this track with ambient sound and during the time changes the style
of the tune many times. It moves between ambient, triphop, various
styles of dnb and even jazz. For a while I was thinking if I should
not call it more tracks in one file - so much it is varying. But
all parts are so good connected, that it wouldnt be truth.
Its definitely one of the best tdr releases and I was excited
when Ive heard it for the first time. If youre a fan of this group,
its must have.
For other releases by Looza visit www.hgb-leipzig.de/ajoscht.

Fiasko 99 module section winner
When the track started to play, I was thinking its like from Mentz.
The style is really very similar, the tune is chiefly made of the dark
atmospheric background and drums. There is also some melody in the
foreground, which is also very good. There was nothing that I would be
against in this tune - only one thing. Its that author of the tune
hasnt showed more unique and original style.
I recommend it to all people who havent still enough of atmospheric
music with lots of drums.
Heres a small add. to the Assembly music reviews I did for Hugi17.
These two reviewed pieces are place 2 and 3 from MP3 compo.
2. 1697pt. Ltkjtkt vie mun naiset by Wode
Behind this strange name hides a very good guitar tune. It sounds
like one of the folk-style guitar tunes with great texts, but heres
also the biggest problem. This style of the music often stands on
the text - and if you dont understand like I did, it loses a lot
of its atmosphere. Good music, but I would recommend it mainly to
the Finnish people I hope its Finnish :.
3. 1547pt. box by jugi
Even when the selected Genre in ID is Drum Bass, I would rather
call it pop. The drumline is distinct, same with bassline, but above
all youll hear the piano and a very nice woman vocal, which break
out of the DrumBass genre more to pop.
In my opinion are some parts of the tune a bit tense, but overall
feeling of this tune is good, mostly because of the piano and the
vocals which are really good. Seems like its 3rd place is rightful.

it was not done at work and it uses no remedy/futuremark technology.
we got the idea in a bar wed-thu night, took 2 days off, holed up at
