I have been mostly eating... sun-rays =====! interview !============================================================= Session Start: Sat Jun 12 19:30:47 1999 *** dake_cdx has joined #demojournal <|ps|> hello there! :) so who are you? :) hi ps :) i'm dake of calodox, a swiss coder, 18 years old, have been in the scene for around 2.5 years now <|ps|> uh, tell us about calodox where when why who Calodox was founded in april 97 by fred and leto who are both from Switzerland. They asked me to join the group. We started to work on a little demo for the buenzli party. Other members joined : Zpider, Workbench, Lando, Rodex, Krafton, Spud, Loxley.. We are now an international group. <|ps|> krafton is on calodox? * |ps| scratches his head.. yes he joined the group then he joined nomad <|ps|> the things we learn with interviews! :D so what happened with demo for buenzli97? and he's doing great job ;) this 256k intro for buenzli5 which was held during summer 97, finished on the 2nd place. We were quite happy to finish on that rank :) <|ps|> and what did you do after that? we worked on another project, a demo for the next buenzli. Unfortunately, we couldn't release it at the party, we had a lot of bugs..herm..you know, party coding :) but I used that code again and I released it for the TMDC3, it's Bunny Tell in fact :) the original demo was in mode 013h though <|ps|> hehe it is? you got 1st place with it then hehe :) Bunny Tell got the 2nd rank at TMDC3, that's cool :) I wanted to make a textmode demo. <|ps|> 2nd? humm... my memory is making me look bad :P yep, 1st was a Static demo <|ps|> humm... well.. if you say so.. :) hehe, yep :) <|ps|> ok, and after buenzli98 came... wired? :) hmm..buenzli6 was in February 98..then we started working on "We don't know you" for Mekka98 <|ps|> oh yes.. we dont know you! :) i kind of liked we dont know you! :) if you had a better 3d engine it would be a really cool demo :) 1 month of work, it was nearly finished when we arrived at the party yes, the 3dengine was damn slow :) like all 3d we made up to now :) it's 100% C the democompo of ms98 was the best i've ever seen fulcrum live :) that was kickass i didn't like the party itself, too much noise, bad food.. <|ps|> uh, i bet it was! :) what was your favorite party so far btw? i really liked buenzli7, the ambiance there was very cool arf!party was also a great party. lot of friends, cool ppl I also attend wired98, but it wasn't as good as arf! <|ps|> how many ppl go to buenzli normally? well, something like 80 were at buenzli7 last year there should be more ppl for buenzli8 buenzli7 was held during a streetparade at Zurich <|ps|> haha :) bad timing :) ok, so what do you do on real life? I'm studying economics but I hate that. I dunno why I've chosen that :) <|ps|> 1st year? In 1 year, I'll go to EPFL in Lausanne and I'll study informatics. no, 4th year :) <|ps|> uh? arent you 18? yes, but swiss system is quite weird :) and it depends where you're in Switzerland <|ps|> thats what im starting to understand :) Before going to university, you've to make 5 years of "gymnasium". When you're 20 years old, there's army.. :) After that, you can go to university. <|ps|> humm.. :) lets change subject, whats your favorite demo of all times? ah, the question de la mort qui tue <|ps|> hehe :) give it a try :) ok, let's say Square/Pulse, I really liked it <|ps|> why? the design rulez, the music too I like that style with strange effects <|ps|> what does design mean for you? well, the way they mixed the gfx's and fx's together it's well done and the syncronisation is perfect <|ps|> i was asking an independant question :) that's the same for any demo :) <|ps|> er... well ok :) what is your fav coder, gfx, tracker then? coders..echo/fudge, skal/bomb they always have great ideas for effects and their code is fast <|ps|> what about gfx and mod? gfx. antony and visualize of pulse visualize, the colors he uses are so strange :) that's an unique style musician : muffler, falcon, shad but as everybody knows, there are a lot of very good musicians <|ps|> :) i heard you got a 4th place at takeover99 :) tell us some more about that :) listen to the peat was done in around 2 weeks yes/oj wanted to see a calodox demo at takeover my sister and my mother had created a "self-made flateric", we brought it with us at arf!party and we filmed some scenes with yes. it was really funny to do that :) i'm sure you remember. and kenet had composed a .xm flatbeat for the module compo of arf!party. we used that module for the demo <|ps|> i remember quite well :) so is flateric a member of calodox now? hehe :) flateric clone is member of calodox, yep :) louis-theodore peuh rulez ! ;) what a shame I wasn't at takeover, I was told the attenders really liked it :) <|ps|> i have to ask you one thing, are cows purple or yellow after all? ahah :) well, the only good cows are those from Valais, and they're black ;) <|ps|> RACIST!!!! nono :) they're really black and they fight together, never seen that on TV ? [editor: http://www.planete.net/~xnicol/Mon_boulot/Photos_de_tournage/Reines_Aproz/images.Aproz/combat.JPG] <|ps|> haha :) ok, so what are your plans for the future then? i'm currently learning C++ and directx programming we're working on a demo for Asm99 Rodex is doing most of the code Flan will work on it for the design and gfx's, with Fred. <|ps|> are you swiss members going there? no, .fi members of cdx will attend it we'll go to LTP though <|ps|> doing a demo for ltp too? depends if we can release the demo at Asm99 if not, we'll try for LTP <|ps|> i see! :) I'm not even sure I'll be able to attend LTP..school suxx ;/ but Fred and Leto will go there for sure <|ps|> ok, are you ready for demojournal quiz-show contest? yes!yes! i was waiting for it ;) <|ps|> 1. what is the capital of madagascar (easy one..) antanarivo :) hehe oops antananarivo ;) hehe, try another one, it's too easy ;) <|ps|> 2. whats the population density in switzerland? something like 141 <|ps|> by square km? yes well, even 150 there're near 7 millions ppl that makes around 6999950 people who aren't in the swiss scene ;) <|ps|> 3. how many demos where there at mekka98? 24 demos? i think it was 24. i was half asleep during the compo :) we thought there would be maybe 6-7 demos :) <|ps|> 4. how many votes did you get on all your productions? :) ouch :) <|ps|> dake: where did i put my calculator hehe :) if we add all votes, it must be around 6000 i don't remember how many votes there were for bring it back no..it must be less <|ps|> uh, are you gonna check that when you logout? :) i hadn't thought about checking that before :) i can't sleep tonight before having a look at results files :) <|ps|> 5. whats your favorite color? green <|ps|> light green or dark green? light :) 0,255,0 =) <|ps|> hehe :) what would you be doing right now if you had never seen a demo in your life? i would probably be a hardcore gamer :) or i would code games i didn't start coding after I had watched some demos <|ps|> how did you started coding then? I had started a bit before, I wanted to make a little game for fun :) in Qbasic ;) <|ps|> bahah, didnt we all? :) ok, i dont know what else to ask. its time for my dinner too so, what is calodox url and your email? :) dinner at 21:30, argh :) ok dake@omedia.ch <|ps|> its only 20:30 here :) ah yes :) and http://calodox.planet-d.net <|ps|> anything else you would like to say? protest against nato? gay pride parade advert? thank your dog? anything at all.. :) just greetings to everybody :) <|ps|> including your dog? :) yes :) <|ps|> what's his name? :) kalie. you know, he likes the flateric puppet :) <|ps|> bahahahaha :) that means the flateric wont survive for along time :) so here you have it folks. from dake and kalie, hello world! :) flateric is now under my bed :) <|ps|> its time for me to go eat :) thank you for your time :) ok :) cya! np ;) i'm irciing too much :) so 30 mins don't mean much :) <|ps|> hehe :) Session Close: Sat Jun 12 20:30:22 1999 =====! demo !================================================================== Start Me Up by the Imago Project (party-version) Found at www.fatorcaos.com.br/overseas/ Competing at Overseas99. Voting is not yet completed, you can still vote for it (or other competing demos & music) at the URL above. System requirements: 4MB HD, any Useless SoundSystem-compatible soundcard a VGA-compatible videocard :) (Yes, no VESA2 or similar) random guess: A pentium 150 with 16MB RAM. In a dos-box, it gives some exception after which I cannot shutdown win98 (it freezes), so try it in DOS (XMS or EMM). The demo: Wowowow! This is one VERY fast and stirring demo. There are always at least 3 things being shown at the same time: a moving background with some effects, a 3D-object, and slogans scrolling or flashing all over the screen. They use normal VGA mode 13H, which means a) a screen takes only 1/4th of the memory and CPU-time required compared to 32-bit VESA, and b) you can use the palette for flashes & fades, which they use a LOT. That's why my requirement-guess is so low. The overall style reminds me a bit of State of Mind, especially the slogans ("Keep the spirit alive", "www.freeyourmind.com", the funny "call now for free merchandizing: 1-800-demoscene", etc). The 3D-objects are not very complex, stars, a puzzle-piece and things like that, but there is always something additional: the puzzle-piece is shown between a puzzle-floor & -ceiling fe, or you can see the wireframe of the object flashing with the music. There is only one hand-drawn picture (standard female face), but lots of textures for objects and backgrounds, and some really cool full-screen logos. There's also a short video-clip of a music-group (according to the credits: Blur, with Song 2). The music: The main part is a remix from Dee Lite's "Groove is in the heart" (it's credited), so we can hear cool voice-samples in this fast, catchy rock-tune. The demo is very synchronized to it, new parts and effects follow the transitions and beeps in the music. I think the music was made before the demo, as the demo fits better to the music than the music fits to the demo (yes, I know that doesn't make sense). There's also a slow, melodic end-part, again really fitting. In the sample-list of the XM, you can read that Alex, one of the musicians (it's a co-op tune), was active on the amiga 7 years ago and is now back because he missed the scene. Well, let's hope he makes more tunes of this quality. Worth the download? Yes sir! No really mindbreaking things in this, but the combination between 3D, 2D-effects, messages and music is close to perfect. The Imago Project shows you can still do great things in 256 colors, if you have good design in it. On the bad side, the flashes are a bit too much sometimes, you can't read certain things, and big flat-colored flashing areas are plain ugly. Also, keeping over hundred files in 3 directories is a bit messier than the one-datafile-approach. But then again, it allows you to read the slogans at you own speed, and I noticed a hand-drawn picture that was not shown during the demo. So check this out, and thanks to PS for pointing me to this one. Seven [editor: uh, thanks to ^magico^ for telling me the compo entrys were available then i guess...] =====! intro !================================================================= Jazz(+Az =) _ Nocturnal _ Icing 99 Well, Rod thing's that Nocturnal's new intro - what works under Win9x too - has nothing to do with "Jazz", but ehh, he is a fanatic in musicial view. ;) My "problem" this time that they used this time a default 256 color black-white palette, and well my monitor's gamma correction is hmm... bad. :) Easy effect's with dope design, and broombastik basses, that's Nocturnal's way to create intros. This time the design lack's a bit, but i think the deadline's fault is that. The logo isn't the best one, and other graphicial things are default too, nothing special to remember, just that the blackground moved behind the words... Effect's are nice, especially i like the particles flying on a landscape (?) [blank monitor =)] part. The much cube (?) moving up'n'down is a part what i like too. I hope they will do a demo in the future, not only intros. Only one thing what was a bit boring: the wire sphere inside another sphere was showed up too long... Lee Dooper =====! music !================================================================= Tokyo Burning Nino downloaded from his homepage (can't rememeber address, but e-mail me and I'll find it for you) [editor: ill do that.. wait a sec... http://fly.to/ninomusics] 1999 I've heard 5 songs made by Nino, they all sound quite good, but a bit repetitive. The positive thing is, that "Tokyo Burning" has no lead - only strings and some drums - that makes this song great as background music. Better than downloading this, I would recomend you "True professionals" or "Thief of Faith", because they are imho the best he has made. [editor: hummm i only had thief of faith until one week ago. i still only listen to thief of faith! :)] ------------------------------------------- Forrest hymn and many more Warder downloaded from his homepage (www.dlc.fi/~warder) 1998 and 1999 The first one is coop with Spin dizzy. Guitar and strings playing in the background and making atmosphere, the flute as the lead. It's a bit of scorpik, a bit of other songs by warder. Quite good. Moors of Ireland,Whistler's bride, Carra's Lament, Emerald isle set, In her eyes, Tyhjan Pirtin Valssi - quite a lot of songs written in some kind of Irish folk style, but more complex. They have more instruments used and there is also much more variations. I recommend all of the songs if you like flutes and celtic music. My brother plays bagpipes and says that the songs are too commercial (pop style), but I don't think so. And warder is just making what is on computer possible. There are also great samples in all songs, only thing I didn't like, that Uillean bagpipes from his synth sound completely different than the real one. ty =====! quote !================================================================= if u want sex nothing really matters.:P ohoh, now ill turn up in the quote area of demojournals.. <|ps|> tmk: *evil grin* do you want to be anonymous? :) nope. i think ppl should stand behind the crap they say. (for the second time, that is) -viinikala i don't think i'll ever leave. my relationship to the scene may be tighter sometimes, but i think it is always needed as a hobby, as an outlet of artistic freedom. the manifestations, shapes and angles may change, but the scene will always exist, and i'll be there. rents / digital artists That's a difficult issue. I personally think you cannot really leave the scene. You can become inactive - but what's activity anyway? Some people think you have to visit demo parties regularly to be an active scener. Other people (like me) have never visited a demo party and are regarded as active sceners. Do you have to release something to be a part of the scene? I know people who think not even that is required, so what? From this point of view, you can say: Once you are a scener and accepted as a scener, you will always be a scener. No matter whether you graduate from university, get married, found the next Microsoft, get the Nobel Prize or become President of the United States. There are some examples of sceners who announced that they had "retired" and are yet watching the scene and are still in contact with "active" sceners. For instance, you often see Danny and Phoenix on IRCNet #pixel. What's the difference to some so-called "active sceners" whose "activity" is nothing more than occasionally showing up on IRC and leeching demos, either? Nowadays Danny calls himself "DannyTBL" again. This shows that although he is officially no scener any more, he still considers himself a member of TBL - and why shouldn't he? After all, everyone knows him as Danny of The Black Lotus, and it would be very strange to most of us if he wasn't a TBL member.
