I have been mostly eating... pizza =====! interview !============================================================= Session Start: Fri May 28 22:41:55 1999 *** virago (virago@level-d.xs4all.nl) has joined #demoj <|ps|> hello hi <|ps|> so who are you? :) well, my nickname is Virago, realname is Martijn Meerts (try to pronounce that! :)), 22 years old, and I'm a dutchman.. (unfortunately :)) <|ps|> what do you do on the scene? I've done just about everything except for music, but now I try to specialise in graphics, webdesign/code and group-organising.. <|ps|> what are your groups/projects? I'm in 2 groups, Nostalgia and Level-D Music.. I joined nostalgia sometime after Bizarre 1998 party in holland as graphician, no projects there at the moment. For Level-D Music I'm one of the founders and organisers. Projects there include a music competition, so called "mother earth project", and we're also setting up a recordcompany with some of the Level-D guys.. <|ps|> nostalgia has been quite innactive for a while, whats going on? yes.. they are quite inactive.. they already had been inactive for about 3 years when i joined them. But you shouldn't forget that almost all nostalgia members are also main organisers for the TakeOver parties in holland.. <|ps|> ok, what about level-d tell us more about it.. :) *ouch*.. well.. that's quite a story.. SlackJaw actually got the initial idea of setting up a musicgroup which would specialise in new age and ambient music.. I liked the idea since i love this style of music.. and so we went looking for some musicians.. unfortunately, hard to find.. But then we met Workbench, who is really great at new age, and since that day we started organising it.. <|ps|> when was it founded? who are in the memberlist now? musicians joined.. did some releases.. did a homepage.. and it seems that people like our music.. and so far, i think we're still the only group doing this (releasing alternative styles of music only that is) when it was originally founded is unclear, but we officially started in january 1998, when we did our first release. The current memberlist is: Slackjaw, Orion, Nogsf, Workbench, Bigbear, KeyG, Echo, Falcon, Nexus, Sprinkle, Xerxes, Dalezy, and myself.. <|ps|> what is the mother earth project about? mother earth project is something Orion and me started. Our goal is to help good causes in this world a bit, doing beneficial cd's in the future, and currently just listing links to websites of existing good causes.. We also have a plan international fosterchild, which is the first action we did under the "mother earth project" name.. <|ps|> about cd's, when is the first level-d records CD out? We don't know exactly when this cd will be out. There have been some slight complications, and a serious lack of time. We'll be doing a demo cd very soon though, and shortly after that, we'll fully concentrate on the first Level-D Records CD. <|ps|> well.. lets talk more about you now, you said previously you hated beeing dutch.. why? yes.. that might seem a bit strange, since i've already lived in holland for 22 years. But it's getting more and more crowded here. Houses are packed together, and there's no more places to really relax at. I'm a person that loves nature, and loves to go out into a forest and just walk around all day, unfortunately, the air in holland is rather bad, and there are almost no forests anymore... <|ps|> well, you have told me you don't drink or smoke. my question is... why? i don't smoke because i don't like cigarettes.. :).. and i don't drink any alcoholic drinks, because of personal reasons i'd rather not talk about.. and i know that i can't take alcohol.. <|ps|> what are the things that make you happy? music, norway, Johanne, and Jenny.. :) <|ps|> what about the things that make you sad? war, violence, holland, and not being in norway with Johanne and Jenny .. :) <|ps|> haha :) lets try another... what are the things that make you mad? mad?.. i don't get mad easily (because i don't like violence).. but the things i do get mad about are small things in general.. what really pisses me off though, are people who treat girls with no respect, see them as objects.. i can't stand those.. <|ps|> how did you see the world around you when you were 16? pretty much the same as now.. with the exception of my love for norway.. <|ps|> when did you first discovered the scene? a *VERY* long time ago.. i think about 12 years, i discovered the C64 scene, although i didn't realize it back then.. i was just interested in games.. and i had some contact in 1 of the biggest game-groups on c64 at that time, called "Hotline". <|ps|> what do you mean contact? i knew a couple of the members of that group... <|ps|> from school? no, i met 1 of them at a local c64 gathering which was held every month at a small hall really close to my home.. and he introduced me to some people.. <|ps|> are you still in touch with that person? yes.. not as close as back then, but i'm still in touch with him <|ps|> ok, changing subject, whats you favorite demo? sunflower.. definately sunflower.. and 303 was kind of a breakthru at the time it was released as well . <|ps|> why do you think 303 is good? i said it was a breakthru, probably because of the lyrics in the music.. <|ps|> you make everything look so simple! :P why make things hard on yourself, if there's a simple approach aswell :) <|ps|> :P so what do you do on real life again? in real life i'm a 2d/3d/webdesigner at the moment, although i'm planning on making level-d records my full time job in the (not so far) future.. <|ps|> does it pay well? it pays well enough imo.. especially since i didn't finish my education :).. accoring to dutch standards, i'm about 600 dollars per month OVERpaid.. <|ps|> humm... why didnt you finish education? still on it or decided to drop? well.. i started doing an education as car mechanic. I did that for the full 4 years, and then failed my practical part of it, so i'm only "theoretically" a car mechanic. (this education gave me a company managament degree however).. After that, i did 1,5 years of a 3 year system operator/coder education.. but it sucked, and when i got offered this job, i just quit school.. <|ps|> back to scene, what is your favorite coder/musician/grafician? favorite coders are unreal and statix, favorite musician are a lot .. i really like falcon, scorpik, vic, probe, workbench, nogsf, and LOTS more.. and my favorite graphician would be Danny.. and Made, TMK, 3daddict running in second place <|ps|> well... im kind of out of questions! :) anything you would like to say? :) ehm.. yeah.. well.. be sure to check out a non-scene (although with scene-people working on it) project called "Atylís", which should be made public sometime within the next few weeks .. <|ps|> ok, dump level-d url and your email! :) level-d url(s) are: music.level-d.com (level-d music), records.level-d.com (level-d records, coming soon), mep.level-d.com (mother earth project, coming soon), www.level-d.com (main page).. and email is martijn@level-d.com or virago@level-d.com .. <|ps|> ok, thank you for your time! :) you're welcome :) <|ps|> any final words? or can i kill the channel? :) "the future is always incomplete, for if the future would be complete, we would call it the past" :)) <|ps|> uuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :) where is that quote from? heard it in a tv series today.. kinda liked it ;)) dunno which series it was.. <|ps|> hehe :) never seen it before.. <|ps|> ok bye for now! :) byebye! Session Close: Fri May 28 23:56:20 1999 =====! demo !================================================================== Helium by 3SS (final version) Found at www.scene.org 2nd place at Icing'99 System requirements: (Wow! Requirements are actually listed in the .nfo! Bigbig thanks!) Pentium, (recommended: PII celeron 300 or higher) 32MB RAM, 64MB recommended. 6.6 MB HD Win9x, DirectSound, DirectX. The demo: "This program cannot be run in DOS mode." Yes, that was a shock for me :). But it seems to have been a requirement for the Icing'99 compo. Although it needs win9x, it's definitely not meant for multitasking: if I keep a dos-box open (for typing this txt, for example), it goes out of sync and the music stutters, very annoying. So close all other progs and use the start-menu. It's difficult to describe this demo; it doesn't follow a fixed style. It's not a 3D-demo, as there is only 1 3D-object (an OK disco-ball with spotlights). There are no full-screen pictures, only smaller ones that are shown over 2D-effects: A photo of a DJ, two pixeled men, and a comic-like girl. And there are Chinese characters and words all over the demo. The emphasis is on 2D-effects, some overused ones like a plasma/wobbling texture, some more original, but no really new ones. My favorite parts are the radial-blurred strings of lights, and the transparent tunnel with a fractal in the background. There are some spoken-word vocals too, which gives the demo more (strange) feeling. Something about masters, traditions, Buddha-fingers ... The transition between parts is mostly something like blackness moving over the screen in a certain form, like a spiral or a wave. Again, not new, but better than cuts or fade-out/in. Ending the demo, there is a very slow hi-res upscroll. The music: There are two songs, one for the main part and one for the endscroller. The first doesn't start immediately, so be patient during the "no voodoo2, no 3D, just 3SS"-part. The main tune is very relaxed, something electric, with echoing beeps, sometimes a bit ambient, but with some faster parts with more percussion too. It fits the demo perfectly, effects follow the transitions, but there is no real synchronizing (except the sub-titles of the vocals). The endtune is more in an electric/pop style, it's a bit repetitive, but I like it. Worth the download? This is a rather strange demo. It is very balanced, in a way. No bad parts, but no excellent ones either. However, if you keep in mind that this is a two-man production, it's already much more impressive. Recommended for people who want to check out something different. Seven =====! intro !================================================================= *strike once again* =====! music !================================================================= Satia Sklathill downloaded from hornet ?? Great piano tune, if you like piano tunes, you should have this one. The song has tempo, very nice ideas, and when starting to be playing the same instrument, then comes the break. Only thing is that some parts are repeated and making the song unnecessarily too long. ------------------------------------------- The Bell / Picture of her Xerxes / Level-d downloaded from level-d.com 1999 Typical xerxes, good atmosphere made by strings, that keep running the whole song. Then come drums to get into the right tempo, voice by Alanis Morisette, and some blipish sound making tempo faster again. Then xerxes starts to play more with the voice and blips come again. Drums out, more variations, it starts to be a bit too long, nothing exceptional. It could be much better, if xerxes would spend more time on this one and give in it more instruments. Second song - starts with drums, choirs coming up, that voice sample I've heard in some of his previous songs, the beats are too strong. Maybe I'm not in the right mood. But in my opinion it's better than "the bell". Both songs don't leave typical xerxes style, but song on the Stage9 musicdisk is much better. Also some of his previous works at night55.com (when it'll be on?) are better. And if you want to check some other level-d releases, rather try "soundscapes" by Big Bear. vt =====! quote !================================================================= <|ps|> fashion: what matters is that its that style of gfx and sprites... :) ok? :) ok fash|dead: "Worauf es ankommt, sind der Stil der Grafik und der Sprites... :) OK? :)" ps: "ok" [editor: adok: this one i'll never forget! :)] =====! question !============================================================== >what was the best party you ever been to?
