s@S$$$$$ $ $$$$$$$$$$ irago $ $$ $ $ definitions $$ $ What is poetry Can it have complete sentences and complete thoughts For as I read a passage in a book I felt as if I was reading poetry The flow of the words the depth of the thoughts and emotions and the imagery made the prose poetic Can prose be poetry I stared out the window the other day and saw the clouds slowly move across the clear turquoise sky I have watched dark menacing clouds encompass the light I swear I have seen a poem When I was younger I judged poetry by the rhyme and sing-song meter Dr Seuss was an example of a poet Hop on Pop was poetry Back then I would have seen this poem as non-poetic It does not rhyme it does not follow a beat I grew a little wiser yet I still would not have considered this poetry It is more like an essay and there s no real feeling behind it Look at those complete sentences! had the physical structure been different it would not be a poem Now as I write I think I know poetry It is the thought the beauty the emotion of the poet It does not have to be said in words or in masked metaphors and analogies It can be said in a book a photograph and a painting Everything I see is a poem Everything i write is a poem Poetry is me
