why ANSi is one of the best game around: author: j33p33
well, the reason seems obvious to many oldschool sceners, ANSI is a nice
group of individuals who care about each other, im myself been in the ANSI
scene since 10 years, hey 10 years isnt it great? i love seeing old names
in the channel, people with who i spent time, learned several interesting
things like the english language, i gained interesting skills mastering
such a difficult medium and trying to do something good out of it, i have
seen many trends pooping out during those years, excellent artists namely
nootropic aka dieznyik lord jazz, halaster, wator, just to name a few, all
of these started specific trends, not to mention the 514 area code crew
which was mad elite, the night angel, fluor, bigge piffe, zarkon, snake
grunger, bibitte, the night prowler, magnetic m, blackviper, firestone
these guys were real cool and influenced many artists, im really proud of
my area code 514, montreal,quebec,canada! not to mention ICE originated
from there as well as several other groups.
i remember the bbs days, i was using some software called THEDOOR and
someone was remotly able to see and interact in thedraw, it was really
cool and some of my students became real good!
what is the best part with ansi, its such a nice game, were you compete
against yourself, try to improve your skills, sharing it with your peers
collecting comments, tricks.
im am aware of the new utilities that came out, mainly that windows based
multiuser ansi editor, i think its a great idea. i know most people will
say ansi is a dead art, but think twice, the resulting files are TINY,
display on about all computers, what you can do with the medium is LIMITLESS
even if some say you cant, it even got animation! it helps you when it
come to drawing pixel art may it be in photoshop or any other software
it helps you developping your sense of perfection, in ansi, if you cant
place the caracters so your curve looks like a curve, you lack!!!, hehe
one of the first thing i learned when i have been shown ansi, is HOW to draw
a circle, i must admit i was really impressed at the question, since i
remember some well renown artist was once asked to draw a circle on paper
and he drew a perfect circle...
there is also some things that i want to clear up, yeah today the computer
is somehow really good, it can do tons of things for you, help you out with
various things, but i dont think utilities like FIGLET and things like that
will ever replace handmade ansi/ascii, everyone got a personal style, its
what is fantastic, and dont expect something outstanding from a font generator, its cool, yeah, its fun for people who want to add a oldschool touch to their
email, their motd or things like that, but besides that, i dont know, maybe
the artists in the scene should contribute to such a apps, making a complete
FONT scheme with their own style, thats my opinion. GIF to ASCII/ANSI will
never be as good as a ansi made from scratch in a editor, its just cheating
in my opinion... yeah, i admit it can be useful in some conditions:
100+ lines ansis, where you draw your outline in photoshop and then convert it
to ansi.
you drew a nice font in a hirez format, and now you would like it in ANSI
thats all i can think of at the moment but well...
on another note, i would like to tell you about the software wonder MYSTIC BBS
its a nice telnettable bbs, FREEWARE one coded by the mystic team which you
may know some of them grymmjack, gooroo its one of the best piece of software
i seen recently, its really awesome so far... its really cool to be able to
play old interleagues game like BRE, tradewars, and so on... please visit em

a telnet client which looks really good, but unfortunatly not as complete

ho, btw, i dont have much time on my hands, im really busy but well, ill have
a super surprise for you ANSI crew in the near future, if you code in c++
or any other language and would like to work on a 3d ansi renderer

is a FREEWARE, its said to support VST, it support all the old standards us
sceners were used to, MOD,S3M,XM,IT,MID and is excellent in terms of sound

and also i encourage you to give donations to the author since we all know
people making free software are either already rich and making software for
fun, or on wellfare and eating 2 days old pizza like the divx coding team.
btw, go check divx 5.0, it seems awesome...
