8bitpoet comes by his small-scale pixelart virtuosity by genuinely oldschool
means, in a former life the late 90s designing Macintosh program icons as
Doc Halpern of Mad Science Laboratories. He is a co-founder of the Dead Pixel
Society.

abcodes ASCII art practice emerged as a vital procrastination outlet for his
renewed programming practice. After coming up with the design at the top of
this infofile, he has thus far failed to revisit the outlet... meaning either
hes been enjoying great focus coding or has adopted a vital procrastination
outlet for his ASCII art practice.

For the past two years, Alpha King has been living up to his nickname and
ripping it up in Blocktronics, lending his textmode art talents hither and yon
on occasion where they are best suited. Our artpacks FILEID.DIZ files fit
the bill!
You may well have seen the textmode works of Andy ndh Herbert in Blocktronics
artpacks, but for reasons known only to his slush-loving self, he has set his
sights on Mistigris as a suitable outlet in which to share some of his more
curious creations. When hes not editing ANSI art, hes programming ANSI art
editors -- his new Moebius application is a breath of fresh air, well worth
investigating for seasoned hands and those new to the medium alike!

Axl is a Parisian artist who works in many styles but who has recently
stumbled upon the Commodore 64s PETSCII aesthetic and is currently feverishly
working every angle of it, machine-generated and bespoke.

Artist, gamer, scientist... not necessarily in that order, BhaalSpawn is
principally a graphite pencil artist, drawing for employers and smaller
clients, but outside of the day job, has a love of science, sci-fi, fantasy and
computer games. When relaxing, like most people they want to avoid work, but...
still have a love of art. As for the particular mechanics of the gamerhaikus
series: I write the haiku as a note, then take a screen shot, turning it into
a picture. I crop it. Then you can draw on the picture with the markup tool in
the iPhone pictures app! You get about 8 colours and 3 pen sizes and poke
away...

Mike Blippypixel Rose is a digital artist whose tastes veer toward the
vintage in electronic music and visuals, dabbling in low-poly 3D modeling,
LED pixelart, and teletext as well as work in the distinctive palette of the
BBC Micro.

Bliss is another of our rotating cast of seasoned textmode artist guest-stars
visiting from the alt-ANSI utopia of the 8bitMUSH at ansiart.com, handy with
their screen-condensed, palette-extended variant, described as FANSI. She
often is concerned with video game subjects, but her interest in fixed-width
pixelart also extends into the textile realm.

A more focused student of the Commodore 64 aesthetic you will not find. Cal
Skuthorpe made a splash invading Twitter with @PETSCIIbots, but that is only
the first stage of his nefarious scheme for world domination.

C0unt WAVnstein is an audio engineer and retro computer enthusaist who grew up

Periodically we encounter someone who is not only a specialist in a given
medium, but who also focuses on a specific theme to the exclusion of all
others. Chuppixel is the worlds preeminent Tiny Towers-style pixelart movie
cast group shot specialist.

Longtime fan, first-time caller CoaXCable of CoolPHat jumped in to contribute
a little ANSI art to this months collection. When we told him that it needed
to be Halloween themed, he went ahead and added a pumpkin to it. Check and
mate!
Everyone has a different road to textmode art. Docpop had to first conquer the
world of the yo-yo before finding his way here, in a roundabout fashion. So
if you think you have something to say about niche passions... youve got
another thing coming! But I damn him with faint praise, also adept in the
fields of game design and chiptun music. Youll just have to look him up to
get the full story.

Dos Grog continues in the expansion of our Italian contingent, demonstrating a
playful devotion to the pixelart medium.

You dont get to see all aspects of an artists creative practice manifest in
a computer artpack you probably wont get a chance to see EmmaDobles work
in ceramics in these pages, but if you settle for her pixelart, its a well
worthwhile consolation prize.

A genuine professional teletext illustrator two decades hence, Steve
Horsenburger Horsley has recently returned to the game for love of the art:
Its kind of frustrating to discover you are good at something only to
realise its pointless in todays world, but I just really like doing it so I
am going to carry on. We feel your pain, Steve! At his website you can
commission original teletext creations from him, so dont delay to get your
own piece of textmode art history!

Dr. Jim Gerrie understands that while we have witnessed a huge amount of
technological progress in the field of home computing over the past three or
four decades, he feels that something important has been lost along the way.
Consequently, his focus lingers on the type-in BASIC era, specifically as
practiced on Radio Shacks TRS-80 MC-10, to which he feverishly ports
programs that never had any business being there in the first place.

Kazunari Kalcha Naito represents the tip of an iceberg we know little of and
understand still less of -- Japans ShiftJIS parallel textmode art scene. His
works are informed by his interests in 70s prog rock, jazz, and fine art.
ldb Laura Brown is a rare bird, perhaps the last practitioner standing of
good old UseNet-style ASCII art, with a masterful command over economy of
slashes, parentheses and asterisks.

Lovecraftian nickname, as he fronts the worlds greatest tribute band to that
particular brand of eldritch cosmic horror -- The Darkest Of The Hillside

You wont see any of Mavriks creative work in this archive, but theres a very
good chance that the collection will have passed through his graciously-offered
web hosting at mistigris.org en route to you, picking up from his historical
facilitator role greasing the gears of Mists KiTSCHNet echomail network from
its home at Daemons Gate BBS.

An old dog doing new tricks, MeaTLoTioN has made a return to the BBS scene
after many years away, and this time is trying his hand at some textmode art,
contributing to the UK scene with some attempts at being creative. On a
normal day he enjoys red meat, vegetables, plenty of greens and a shipping
ton of gravy.

While watching his old man MeaTLoTioN trying to make some patterns on the

what he could come up with. Still finding his feet and style, hes full of
enthusiasm and spirit.

Nikki and Bunty are, in their words, two queer women who love retro games,
technological tat ... and arty crafty stuff! Given their peerless pedigree,
its more or less inevitable they would find their way into the teletext
revival... at least one of them has taken up their arcane art, which we are
authorized to share with you.

Snake PETsken fell in love with Commodore computers when he was 8... 36 years
ago... and tries to keep the same wonder and passion from when he was a kid,
starting to grasp the fundamentals of coding. His modern graphite portrait
practice must have somehow influenced his PETSCII style, driving him to try to
get the most out of every single character cell. The only software he uses is
Petmate, a nice PETSCII editor, and you can see his PETSCII handiwork in
releases by The Solution.

Ed Starstew Stastny is that rare synthesis suggested in the two-word phrase
computer artist, practicing a species of net.art at SITO continually since
even prior to the establishment of Mistigris. Having mastered and
subsequently discarded so many styles and approaches, wearing the masks of a
half-dozen faux handles he could easily masquerade as an entire artgroup. Or
has he in fact been doing this... all along?

Stephan Rewind Bellin has a practice of making pixelart portraits of
characters from the silver screen at their most iconic, with aspirations to

Every time I include her in an artpack, I find myself completely rewriting
Theresa Oborns bio, as though I might somehow hew closer to the truth, like a

work speaks for itself.

Xennial doesnt need an artgroup, she is an artgroup. One more case of the
parade continuing after the band stopped playing, courtesy of the bottomless

offer is drag factor!

Communities of text art practice emerge through certain social contexts but
the basic premise is such an appealing idea that it keeps getting invented and
reinvented. XTComics draws comic strips using a combination of low ASCII
