Sand Mandala Painting: From an exhibition catalog
In Tibet, mandala sand paintings would be created for a number of purp
oses. For example, one could be made for use in a tantric empowerment
ceremony, or for a blessing during group meditation retreat. A mandal
a of the Healing Buddha could be made for empowerment and consecration
of medicines, or as a preliminary to a ritual healing ceremony. A loc
al community might commission on as a part of a ceremonial ritual for
world peace, prosperity, or the mitigation of natural calamities. In
brief, there are as many purposes as there are needs in the humand com
munity.
The Mantrayana speaks of four classes or division of the tantras, and
each class has a large number of tantric systems. Each individual sys
tem represents or emphasizes the cultivation and expression of a parti
cular enlightenment quality. For example, Avalokiteshvara represents
compassion, Manjushri is wisdom, Vajrapani is strength, Amitayus is lo
ngevity, the Medicine Buddha is healing, and so forth. Each of these
systems has its own mandala.
