I've been mostly eating... can smoke =====! interview !============================================================= =====! demo !================================================================== Genesys by Digital Oblivion (party-version) Found at Psychic Symphony's harddisk [ed: nice place to find things] 1st place at Optimize'99 System requirements: 7 MB HD, Win9x The demo: Psychic asked me to review this demo a while ago, but I had problems finding it. So it had to wait till I could copy it directly from PS's harddisk at Winter Reunion :) Genesys is a semi-hires demo: it uses a 400*300 (more or less) window of the 640*480 screen. Regarding style it's a typical effect-demo, but it has also a small theme: the Genesis-part of the bible, with the creation of earth, seas, plants, fish etc, ending with mankind. This is shown with well-known effects like waves in 3D water, flying over a voxel-scape, a 3D-fractal tree etc. Some typical 3D-objects are used too, like the dolphin and the human, both with environment mapping. The dolphin moves in a strange way, with the entire body doing a sine wave. This doesn't look good, especially the head. Other effects are more original, like the 2D fire-particles that move along, leaving a fading trail along that explodes in other particles. Or the rotating stars at the start, that are combined with radial blur and the rotating fractal-effect in a randomized way (always different every time you see it). However, the demo lacks good transitions that make the different effects a solid whole. At the end, we have an oldskool upscroll with combined credits and greetings. There is a very fine Digital Oblivion logo at the start, plus the Genesys-title in a medieval metallic font. The other pics are flares and textures, plus a background for the dolphin-part, but nothing spectacular. The soundtrack start with a female "In the beginning"-sample, but with so much echo that it's hard to understand. The rest of the main tune switches between two styles: the first is slow and a bit dark, with a flute and oriental singing. The second is happier, with synths and funky drums, more "demo-style" :) From time to time we spot some creative syncing, like the waves in the water starting at a beat, in addition to normal part-syncing. Worth the download ? Genesys has its share of good and bad points. The high-res style looks good, it has original parts and there's nothing that. On the other hand, the other parts are rather old, the demo lacks good transitions between different parts, and the colors could be better: pure red/green/blue for bumpmapping, or pure red/yellow/white for a fire-effects is something you should avoid, and there is a part with blobs at the start that looks so dark that I barely noticed it. It has nothing to do with the film Matrix or the demogroup Matrix, and it has even less connection to Matrix, the "amazing winner" 4k at Assembly 1999. It was entered at the Flag 1998 party, but due to some problems it was not played in the competition. When a 4k intro "has music", it is often just a few kinds of noises put together to demonstrate that the programmer was able to squeeze some audio playback into such a small size. This is not the case here. The concept of this intro was to put a music as good as possible into 4k. The intro features realtime sound synthesis. The music is a very complex one, with many types of instruments, and it is a really good and listenable tune, not only "considering its size", I think. Because of the complexity of the audio part, just a few bytes were left for the visuals. Therefore the intro itself is just one single effect. It is some twirly thing, which seems to be a simple palette-cycling plasma. It is quite spectacular, however simple it is. Due to realtime sound sythesis the intro required a "strong" processor in 1998 (I remember how it struggled on my Pentium 100 back then:) - nowadays the "average" ones will do the job fine, too. The music is played through GUS, so SB owners will be left out from the fun... But if you have a GUS, you must check it out. gekko =====! music !================================================================= Sofa surfin' (short) Falcon www.tdr.scene.org Seems I don't have luck on good tracks and so I'm here with the review of this "old" track. As you might expect, "Sofa surfin'" is a very good song with triphop feeling, deep basslines, well placed sounds that form the atmosphere, fitting percussion and a bit of melody. Let us take a deeper look at it. Falcon writes here that he was inspired by a-move, craig armstrong, massive attack and portishead. Strongest inspiration goes from "life after midnight" by a-move, which was released through "repertoire 2" musicdisk. If you play both tracks, you'll find out that they're quite similar, but only on the top. A-move's track sets up the atmosphere quite fast and till the end it just stands on it adding and changing instruments + more evolved drumline. Falcon's track goes in the sound a bit deeper. Since the beginning he sets up more spacial sound by rain and percussion which is set up to both speakers with high separation. The percussion and the bassline is in this a bit similar to the mentioned massive attack. Bass has a bit higher volume than a-move's and gives to the track more swingy triphop feeling, also the percussion goes faster and it's high stereo separation makes it more impressive. Falcon uses secondary sounds more effectively and especially samples of conversation give it more movie feeling - when I've listened to it, I saw in my mind a view of a man who stands on the hill near the city and just looks at the lights of the city where the crime is daily bread and where at the bars sit tough guys like Humphrey Bogart. :) It is extremely good 8 min trip and if you haven't heard it, you should know that you've missed something again. Now about some other songs I've heard and which are not completely bad. First one is "Eksajoule" by Lindon, which was released at monotonik. It is a kind of experimental dreamy electronic idm. Almost through whole track goes a looped melody accompanied by ambient pads, some secondary sounds and a monotonous drumline. For me it is boring, but if you can turn you mind off and it's your style, you'll like it. Another interesting track is "Horisont" by Xerxes, released at Level-d. It is a classical xerxes track - an ambient ballad, it only contains more unusual sounds than last time. Again a download for fans of this style only. This will be all today, because I don't feel like I would write "retro". Maybe you could, just go on and write about your favorite track which others may have not heard and you just loved (or love) it.
