I've been mostly eating... lene marlin's songs =====! interview !============================================================= Session Start: Sat Jan 22 03:35:20 2000 *** md has joined #demojournal laa me eat banana <|ps|> hello there! so why do you want to eat bananas at 3:30 am? it's 5:40 am and umm err because i'm lazy hehe <|ps|> i see i see.. and what are these 2 letters m and d supposed to mean? what is md? it's an ambiguous way to say many things one of them being mellow-d but i thought mellow-d was basically kind of stupid so it's just md :) <|ps|> and what does mellowdiee do on this crazy little world we call scene? i eat and diiiiGGESST you alL! nah i'm just here to shake up and stir <|ps|> ok, so lets get to the point, what was your first computer? apple IIc then amiga 500 then you can probably figure it out :) <|ps|> when did you started interested in tracking and the scene? at school, a gamer type of dude, showed me some megaforce amiga intros and somehow him and i got fooled into making a group <|ps|> which was named.. i cannot reveal that information :) anyway, um and stuff <|ps|> :P ok, so what followed that on your scene carreer? some tracking, some more tracking and an occasional tracking :D <|ps|> boohoo, in which groups? and which major prods? oh i am bad with years but my first real group was securitate which was with turtle and others <|ps|> go on.. and then came the razkels, on amiga, we made a lot of intros that maybe 5 people saw and umm then hmm i can't remember! FUCK yes razkels became "deadline sf" which became something else <|ps|> which you dont recall the name =) aaaaaaanyhow, i was inactive for a year, went to sonic pc in like 1991 or 2, did plan b intro <|ps|> plan b is nice, we like plan b =) then i was strolling around again releasing music disk stuff until i met the tpolm guys <|ps|> 1992 was looonnnnngggggggg ago that's pretty much the gap demoscenewise that gap was filled by the #trax scene if you can make that distinction anyways <|ps|> #trax used to be alot closer to demoscene why do ppl now separate so much both sides? personally i find them very close now :) well i dunno, it's musicians doing musician stuff, and coders doing coder stuff you know doing this isn't going anywhere :) <|ps|> ok.. what after tpolm joining... where is fm entering? yes tpolm is a fantastic community the best thing ever in many ways is tpolm fm however has been veeeeery inactive doing nothing for years see the interviewer's supposed to take the discussion somewhere at this point <|ps|> and whats this thing with having tracks on lots of recent "design" demos? :) well it's a lucky streak <|ps|> you ever been to las vegas? or seen elvis? elvis is seen in las vegas alot no and no ! i HAVE seen elvis many times he's kinda cool <|ps|> elvis rules so whats your favorite elvis song? blue suede shoes also the first that comes to mind <|ps|> yeah that rocks! so, why are you in shorts at home while there is a blizzard outside? cuz i likez to kick it <|ps|> kick it? yeah, kick back and take it easy :) it's fun going to the window, it's always shocking to see what's outside when inside it's warm as hell and you're wearing shorts :D (yes i do go out, but i change into pants ;) <|ps|> hehe so, you beeing a musician by nature, what gear do you use? my instrument is basically the tracker, that's all i can really play i can't save my sorry ass in a club with a piano it's musical programming, to be honest, what i do like, cutting and slicing samples and sticking them onto something <|ps|> ok, what gear do you use for sampling then? well the gear list: a mixer, croaker's Akai S3000XL sampler, yamaha tx81z fm generator, boss dr-660 drum machine and a digitech multieffect and most importantly the pc with all it's marvellous software <|ps|> =) you seemed to turn alot from experimental with general sounds into electronical experimental, how do you plea? i figured out how the sound should sound like actually i keep refiguring that old songs are old experiments with that sample set each song is an experiment with a currently available sample set <|ps|> is the industrial side of you defintly gone? no :) what makes you say that <|ps|> well.. it seems you have turned alot more into electronica and idm sounds they all fall into the same genre as far as i'm concerned industrial and electronica and idm and ambient and trip hop are versions of each other <|ps|> no more needle printer printing and "i would like to use my fucking gus please" samples.. hehe well why not <|ps|> .. tell us how do you get into making a new song.. and how did it change across the years... it's all based on momentary lapse of reason :) like, what comes to mind when tracking is what will get tracked next question :) <|ps|> what do you do for inspiration? there's a good one! there is no good answer except "i live" :D <|ps|> uh.. =) hehe <|ps|> you didnt answer the question about how creating new songs changed through the years... was it always the same? that is a very very tough one <|ps|> do you still do tracks now like you did on 91? no :) far from it <|ps|> well.. in what way did it change? that's very impossible to describe but let's say ten years ago it was easier to just fool around in the tracker not knowing what it was now that i know it quite well it's so much easier to do things impulsively with it :) this interview is pretty 5 am :) <|ps|> boohoo.. ok.. now for top quiz show contest haha <|ps|> you ready? 1. whats your favorite color? why do i have to pick can't i like them all? but i guess blue <|ps|> erm.. you just fucked my second and 3rd question :P :) ok go on <|ps|> 2. what was the weirdest place you ever woke up at? an after-rave-morning, in the toilet, while still in the rave place, 3 hours after the rave had ended worst ^ weirdest, i'd have to think about <|ps|> 3. what was the most interesting book/movie you ever read/seen? movie: seven book: think <|ps|> think is a book or you are thinking? (think = a philosophy on philosophy by this guy) wait i'll get his name well some guy :) <|ps|> 4. what is the capital of madagascar? can i use alta vista? <|ps|> no =) hehe *shrug* dunno <|ps|> 5. what is your favorite tea brand? hey! what is the answer to #4? <|ps|> bahahahah =) antananarivo =) ^ madagascar's capital twinings earl grey word :D <|ps|> ok, now we have some outsidders questions! =) how many interviews have you been through.. and who were the interviewers? uh oh <|ps|> ok, just a number then.. can you remember how many? =) nobody EVER remembers the interviewer huh? :) nyah nyah maybe around ten <|ps|> beeing the interviewer is a dirty job but someone has to do it ok.. next question.. who are some of your favorite chip artists? rez distance loonie top 3 :) <|ps|> oki =) serious stuff now.. whats up with scene.org? we need people who would actually do things :) we're an international team of 15 - mostly slacking there are exceptions like redhound who are doing a marvelous job <|ps|> what kind of people do you need exactly? well, basically we want to produce more "forum" for the scene. we have the archive already, and we host a LOT of groups' web pages, but something in between these things is lacking and that's a forum, or scene :) and for that we need to build a good engine for reviews, articles, basically turning the site into an online diskmag with the productions attached <|ps|> well.. what sort of ppl do you need to make that step? so if you are reading this and you think "hmm i could help there" in terms of coding php, sql or such, we need you and after that, if you're a scene reporter, we need you badly :) <|ps|> so where should ppl mail for the job? staff@scene.org or you can mail me directly at md@tpolm.com :) or both! <|ps|> oki.. so now i dont know what to talk about again do you have any pets? going back to demos <|ps|> thats not a bad idea either.. but ill wait till you talk about your pets ;) i want to take the opportunity to give a shout out to slyde, byter, feather, raven and bstates those guys kick ass and stuff super duper fantastic shit <|ps|> hei, talk about your pets first.. ill get you into demos later my pets. they are: a fluffy dog a fluffy cat <|ps|> did your fluffy dog eat your fluffy cat? :) the dog is chasing the cat, running from the right to the left in my view when i look at the computer <|ps|> :P ok, so now we can talk about demos! what did you wanted to say about slyde and byter and fthr and raven and bstates just wanted to take the opportunity to publically dis, erm, greet them in a medium which they might read hehe <|ps|> ok, what do you think about this 3d acc demos trend of 99 beeing better then non-3d acc? we likes 3d acc demos? fuck ALL that shit concentrace on aesthetic guys! what looks good, looks good <|ps|> we like good old design demos =) i *love* design demos i think they should be all about design i hate demos that go "890482 vector balls" <|ps|> how do you define design btw? well in demos i find it easy. in demos, you either concentrate on the technique or the final result :) errr to rephrase that you either concentrate on the technique or the .. design? :) anyway, i think demos should be, to use a cliche, multimedia demonstrations, i.e. basically what looks good and sounds good is important not how it's made. <|ps|> why is that? it's what you digest with your eyes and ears then ok, you can get to the specifics this voxel landscape brought to you by pentium 3 and such you know what i mean? <|ps|> oki.. about intros now.. whats with this good intros on 99? =) ok yeah good intros of 99 good stuff i can't name anything except hplus and that was tp98 wasn't it <|ps|> yeps.. hplus is over 1 year old now is hplus your favorite intro of all time? no <|ps|> which one is? maybe deesbab or one of that era of orange prods anyway <|ps|> not bjoer? =) björ is fantastic dazzzit <|ps|> oki.. tricky question for yah then.. which is the best intro with bstates music (without counting deesbab) fuck i can't remember names and i can't remember which tune was in which intro <|ps|> your bad in memory biz =) hmmhm sings point to denmark hmmmmm <|ps|> denmark? YES PAGER 11 BEST INTRO EVER. <|ps|> pager 11 =) oki, one final question.. what is your best song? maybe te-2rb it was a twist <|ps|> oki, thank you for your time jakko =) you rule! =) kisses and hugs =) hugs and smooches and flowers and roses"!!!#"¤)= :) "flowers and roses" ahah <|ps|> noses are red violets are blue my name is halme and who the fuck are you :P yes! mikko u r omo internationally recognized and celebrated champion of poetry <|ps|> =) make some advertise to place where ppl can dl your songs or some homepages your connected with ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/music/artists/mellow-d/ www.tpolm.com www.fm.org <|ps|> oh yeah.. how was the dawn of year 7000 with tpolm? well we had overestimated the y7k. instead we went off having a fantastic party in the fantastic french countryside with fantastic people in a fantastic atmosphere :) it was in a word, fantastic <|ps|> that sounds fantastic! ;) hehe <|ps|> oki, thx for your time =) Session Close: Sat Jan 22 04:53:30 2000 =====! demo !================================================================== Higher Ground by Damage (party-version) Found at www.scene.org 3rd place at The Party'99 non-accelerated demo compo System requirements: 5.4 MB HD, "a fast PC", Vesa2, Midas for sound. Runs also under Windows, but I've had it crashing once. The demo: Yep, another review from TP, because there haven't been much other parties, let alone one with better productions (so don't complain). Higher Ground has a kind of gangsta-theme (you know, angry young blacks with guns). It's expressed in the pictures, text and music, but without following a story. The pictures are an important (and good) part of the demo: a good pixeled logo, some large faces, and lots of smaller pictures that form a roll of film. I like the way the pictures are used, as effects, not just shown stationary on the screen as in most demos. For example, when a series of small images scroll over the screen, each one zooms out and fades away at a certain position. Also the credits are nice, with pictures of (I think) famous movie-personae with guns. The pictures are divided in overlapping vertical columns, that fade up and scroll together, then fall down. Nice! The code itself is not impressive: there are OK (sinus-morphing) tunnels with and without flares, a plasma, a semi-sphere 3D object between two planes... (yawn). The zooming looks a bit too blocky, as if it makes some rounding error. Also, when you fade/merge images slowly, it's better to use 32 then 16-bit colors. Look at the Damage-title when it fades up, you see the colors "jump" a little. The music is not my favorite style, it's very repetitive d&b, but I guess that's OK for this kind of demo. Also syncing is not 100%, the pictures/objects zooming don't seem to follow any beats, but the voice-samples are used at the right times. Worth the download ? Higher Ground is not a special demo, but it has good pictures and good design. You can do a lot with simple fading/zooming/scrolling... Things I disliked were the tearing under Windows, due to being unable to sync with the vertical retrace, and the "fast CPU"-requirement: for a 320*150 screen with 16-bit colors, a Pentium should suffice, or a PII if it's slow code. We're in 2000, "fast CPU" means PIII or Athlon, according to the adverts :) I wonder when the demos will start giving "Buy a PIII, jerk!"-error messages... I hope not too fast :) Seven =====! intro !================================================================= Best intros of 1999: [abc order] -Bakkslide7 by hellcore+omnicolor dark, hi-res, awesome code. I just wanna say that those articles were always there. If I remember correctly I read some in Imphobia.
